Donald Saluta Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 6, 2025.
Donald Saluta, 91, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, in Palm Desert, California. Born on June 29, 1933, in Somerville, Massachusetts, Donald lived a rich and purposeful life marked by dedication to education, deep family bonds, and a passion for the outdoors.

A proud graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Donald began his career as an English instructor at Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut. There, he not only taught but also immersed himself in the boarding school community and coached athletics-an early indication of his lifelong commitment to shaping young lives both inside and outside the classroom.

In 1969, Donald made a bold move across the country to join the faculty at Robert Louis Stevenson School in California. At that time a boys' boarding school, Stevenson would undergo a transformation into a co-educational institution during his tenure-a change Donald witnessed and helped shape. His influence extended far beyond the classroom. In 1983, he transitioned into administration as Director of Admissions, a role he held with distinction until his retirement in 1999.

Donald's leadership during the challenging years for boarding schools in the early 1980s was nothing short of remarkable. His vision and discipline helped build an admissions system that became a model of efficiency and effectiveness. He was known for his high expectations and clear guidance-qualities that earned him admiration from students and colleagues alike. His coaching in swimming and water polo left lasting impressions on generations of students, and his two-page English usage guide became a treasured tool for many aspiring writers.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Donald was a man who embraced life with enthusiasm and grace. He found joy in many pursuits-sailing at Still Water Cove, playing chess, embarking on treasure hunts along the shore with his daughters, and taking camping and backpacking trips with his family. But it was on the golf course where Donald found his greatest joy. Golf was more than a pastime; it was a way for him to connect with others and explore new places. Among his proudest moments were playing at the historic St. Andrew's Golf Club in Scotland and achieving two hole-in-ones at his home course in Florida.

After returning to California later in life, Donald continued to enjoy sunny days on the golf course-especially when shared with his daughter-in-law-followed by a good steak and a glass of wine. His charisma made him friends wherever he went; he had an innate ability to make others feel welcome and valued.

Donald's love for his family was boundless. He took immense pride in watching them grow and thrive. Videos of his great-grandchildren never failed to bring a grin to his face and a sparkle to his eye. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Shaun Saluta Heafner and Erin Delaney Saluta; grandchildren John Noah Heafner, Christian Joseph Heafner, and Rebekah Ruth Heafner; and great-grandchildren AnaClaire Elizah Crook and Pierce McComas Heafner.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jane Callicoat Saluta; parents Joseph and Margaret Saluta; and sister MaryAnne Saluta Stetson.

A devout Catholic throughout his life, Donald carried his faith quietly but steadfastly. His legacy is one of integrity, kindness, intellect, and unwavering devotion to those around him.

May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a reminder of a life well lived. A Graveside Service will be held on July 26, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Mount Auburn Cemetary 580 Mount Auburn Street. Golf attire is preferred dress code
