Hunter Sonny Hogan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2025.
Hunter Canady "Sonny" Hogan, 74, passed away on February 7, 2025, in Ventura, California. Born on December 20, 1950, in Borger, Texas, Hunter lived a life marked by compassion, curiosity, and a deep commitment to both personal growth and the well-being of others.

Hunter pursued higher education with determination, earning degrees in both nursing and physical therapy. However, his professional path eventually led him to become a union organizer-a role that reflected his enduring dedication to justice and advocacy for working people. His work was not just a career but an extension of his values: fairness, solidarity, and care for those around him.

In the early 1970s, Hunter joined the United States Marine Corps and later transferred to the Reserves. His service exemplified his sense of duty and discipline-qualities that would continue to shape his life long after his military years.

A man of faith and spiritual depth, Hunter studied the Bible extensively and attended services at Ventura Missionary Church and Community Presbyterian Church. He was baptized at Ventura River Community Church. His spiritual journey also included exploration of eastern philosophies and practices. He was known for keeping friends on his prayer lists and offering thoughtful support to those in need.

Hunter's intellectual curiosity extended far beyond formal education. He was an avid reader with a particular interest in world geopolitical issues. Self-education was a lifelong pursuit for him-he sought understanding not only through books but through meaningful conversations with others.

He found joy in simple pleasures as well. Riding his bike along the beach or through downtown Ventura brought him peace and connection to the world around him. These rides were more than exercise-they were moments of reflection and freedom.

Those who knew Hunter remember him as fun-loving, kind-hearted, easygoing, caring, well-read, and somewhat social-a friend to many whose presence brought warmth and insight into every room he entered. His passing is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his sister Wanda Hogan; his mother Wanda Hogan; and his father Herman Hogan.

May Hunter Canady "Sonny" Hogan's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire lives rooted in compassion, learning, and faith.

A celebration of life will be held in Ventura Sunday, July 27 at 2:00 pm. For more information contact [email protected]

Hunter was a very special person. Everytime I cut his hair he would have a new story about what adventure he did. Hunter had a big heart for everybody and everything. Sorry you had to go so soon......
