James Haire Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2025.
James Philip "Jim" Haire, 95, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, in Torrance, California. A devoted public servant, loving family man, and proud patriot, Jim lived a life marked by integrity, dedication, and deep connection to those around him.

Born on May 20, 1930, in Los Angeles, California, Jim grew up in a neighborhood near West 65th and Western Avenue. From an early age, he was drawn to public service. As a young boy, he once saw a motorcycle officer stationed at the corner of Slauson Avenue and another nearby street. He told his family with conviction, "I'm going to sit on that corner one day." (And he did.)

True to his word and driven by purpose, Jim took police science courses at Los Angeles City College, then began his career with an early stint at Hawthorne Police Department, followed by 28 years with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Jim enjoyed a distinguished career that spanned decades. He served in numerous capacities including patrol, motorcycle detail as a Sergeant at Harbor Division, Intelligence, and Administrative Vice as a Lieutenant. He embodied the department's motto: "To Protect and Serve."

After retiring from LAPD, Jim embarked on a second career as head of security for Mobil Oil's western United States operations. His expertise and leadership extended internationally when he traveled to Indonesia to support Mobil Oil's efforts abroad.

Jim's commitment to service extended beyond law enforcement. He served six years in the United States Navy and remained a steadfast patriot throughout his life. He took pride in encouraging future generations to honor their country-often rewarding his great-granddaughter Kiera with quarters for every American flag she spotted and cheered.

Education was important to Jim. He attended Saint Anselm's Catholic grammar school and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1948. He later earned a master's degree in Communication from Pepperdine University.

A true outdoorsman, Jim had a lifelong love of nature and physical activity. In high school he swam and ran track; he enjoyed days at the beach and had a passion for hunting and fishing. As a boy, he raised rabbits and pigeons and developed an impressive understanding of wildlife behavior-especially birds.

Family was central to Jim's life. He is lovingly remembered by his sister Patricia Haire, daughters Jenifer King and Michelle Martin; sons Jeffrey and Matthew Haire; granddaughters Theresa and Casandra King; great-granddaughter Kiera Kary; and many nephews, nieces, and their children. He was predeceased by his parents Edward Leo Haire and Mary Elizabeth D'Arcy; brothers Edward and Thomas Haire; sister Mary Sully; wife Charlene, and son Michael Thomas.

In recent years, Jim cherished daily phone calls with family and friends. He found joy in the companionship of his granddaughter Sandy and her little dog Angus. His granddaughter Terry fondly recalls: "PaPa was strong and brave; handsome, a good friend, a good listener-he always did the right thing."

Jim was part of the Silent Generation-a cohort known for its resilience, frugality, and strong work ethic-all qualities he exemplified throughout his life.

Masses of Intention will be said for the repose of James's soul at Saint Catherine Laboure Catholic Church, Torrance, California, on the following dates: October 9 and 10 at 8:00 a.m., October 27 and 28 at 8:00 a.m., December 27 at 5:00 p.m. Interment will be private at Los Angeles National Cemetary.

May James Philip "Jim" Haire's legacy of service, strength, and love continue to inspire all who knew him.
