John Sowers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 5, 2025.
John Sowers passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025 in the presence of his loving sister and brother-in-law at Methodist Hospital in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He is survived by his sister, brother and his six nieces and nephews and many grand nieces, nephews and in-laws. He shared a deep love for his family and was deeply loved, as well. John was baptized into the Christian faith in his early years in Knoxville.

John 3:16 " For God, so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

He pursued many varied interests in his 76 years. His early youth was dedicated to exploration as an avid ham radio operator. At Salem College, in West Virginia, he became active in caving groups annually, each Labor Day. The mention of John's name brings back over 50 years of fond memories from his fellow cavers. John decided to not only hike, crawl and squeeze in caves, but also to swim in a few. He took up scuba diving and explored caverns and deep springs in Florida. Paleontology was another interest he found exciting on digs in Montana. A museum near Morgantown, West Virginia has a some of those findings.

John worked for AutoZone for over 30 years. His fellow workers appreciated his cheerful disposition and he was always eager to help coworkers and customers. He volunteered with the Roane County, Tennessee rescue squad and used his caving and scuba diving expertise to train others in support of rescue situations. In his retirement he traveled. He followed the Mississippi river from his origin to its end. He explored the renowned Route 66 and the southwest of America. He also made many excursions to Iowa to visit his brother's family.

In his rich and full life, it was his family and friends that John loved the most. He seldom missed a holiday, or outing with family or friends. He added a flare to each Christmas, which is a story in itself. John will be greatly missed, but memories of him will always bring a gift of joy to those who knew him and loved him.

John 14:1 " Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?"

The family would like to thank his many friends for their love and support over the years!

I was shocked and saddened to learn of John's passing. I met John while a student at Salem College (WV), and have fond memories of caving trips with him and shenanigans at the old field house in Tucker County. We fell out of touch over the years, but reconnected via Facebook a few years back. I am honored to have called him friend.
