John Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 8, 2025.
John "Jack" Smith III, 89, passed away on August 19, 2025, in Wilmore, Kentucky. Born on August 11, 1936, in Louisville, Kentucky, Jack lived a life marked by dedication to his profession, service to his country, and a deep passion for the world of horse racing.

A proud graduate of Western Kentucky University, Jack began a distinguished career that spanned both corporate and public service. He served as Director of Public Relations for the Phillip Morris Company, where his leadership and communication skills left a lasting impact. His commitment to the Commonwealth of Kentucky was further demonstrated through his role as Commissioner of Racing-a position that reflected not only his professional acumen but also his lifelong love for thoroughbred horses.

Jack's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Jack H Smith III Thoroughbreds, where he combined business savvy with personal passion. His involvement in the horse racing industry was more than a career-it was a calling that brought him joy and purpose throughout his life.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Jack served honorably in the United States Navy. His time in the military instilled in him a sense of discipline and duty that remained evident in all aspects of his life.

Known for being active and gregarious, Jack brought energy and warmth to every room he entered. Whether engaging with colleagues or spending time at the track, he was admired for his enthusiasm and approachable nature.

Jack is survived by his sons, David and Clay; and by his brothers, Patrick and Barry. His legacy lives on through them and through the many lives he touched over the years.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Committal Service will be held on September 12, 2025, from 12:30 AM to 01:30 AM at Camp Nelson National Cemetary 6980 Danville Rd in Nicholasville, KY
