Lloyd Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 27, 2025.
Mr. Lloyd "Tuffy" Smith, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025, in Madera, California. Born on June 16, 1936, in Calexico, California. Lloyd, a lifelong Chowchilla resident, lived a life marked by dedication to service, deep faith, and an unwavering love for family and friends.

Lloyd began his distinguished career in law enforcement with two years as a Police Officer, followed by three years as a California Highway Patrol officer. He then served for 26 years as a Special Investigator for the State of California. His final five years in public service were spent as the Chief of the Medi-Cal Fraud Division at the State Capitol a role that reflected both his integrity and leadership.

After retiring from state service, Lloyd continued to make an impact by founding Central Valley Traffic School. Through this endeavor, he taught thousands of students facing traffic violations. What many expected to be a tedious Saturday class often turned into an engaging and enlightening experience under Lloyd's instruction. His ability to connect with people and make learning fun left a lasting impression on countless individuals. Many classes ended up with a trip to Wool Growers one of his favorite restaurants.

Lloyd's passions extended far beyond his professional life. A true cowboy at heart, he found joy riding and caring for his horses. He enjoyed riding with his 'Posse', together they rode the foothills, mountains, beaches, and several trips across Death Valley. His favorite ride was proudly riding down Colorado Boulevard in the Rose Parade. He was also known for working the land with his beloved refurbished John Deere tractor and tending to his garden, always sharing its prized vegetables with others. RV camping trips and entertaining friends were among his favorite pastimes, always bringing laughter and a good time wherever he went.

A man of strong faith, Lloyd was a devoted member and supporter of Cornerstone Church in Chowchilla. In 2022, he reaffirmed his spiritual commitment through baptism in the Name of the Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost. His belief in God and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was central to his life.

Lloyd was also active in fraternal organizations; he was a proud member of the Tehran Shriners and served as Past President of the Temple Mounted Patrol-roles that reflected both his leadership skills and love for giving back.

He is lovingly remembered by his sons Kelly Smith (and wife Wendy Smith) and Todd Smith; grandchildren Shane Leoni, Justin Smith, Terrin Wells, Rachel Smith-Boutilier, Kelli Smith, and Caitlin Smith; great-grandchildren Carson Leoni, Vincent Leoni, Vanessa Ortiz, Natalie Smith, and Gianna Leoni; sisters Wanda Bollinger, Bernice "Tweet" Teeter, and Linda Fernandez; nephews Daryl Mull, Brett Teeter, David Bollinger; nieces Laurie Goosev, Donnell Rock, Shirley Baldwin, Glynnis Mull, Kim Hodapp, and Darice White.

Lloyd now joins in eternal rest his beloved wife Patricia Smith; daughter Cindy Smith; parents Chet & Curl Smith; sister Ruby Mull; in-laws Neil & Hazel Bollinger; brothers-in-law Shirley Bollinger, Leroy Mull, Don Bollinger, Butch Fernandez, David Teeter; sister-in-law Betty Bollinger; nieces Shirrell Vincent and Claudia Fernandez.

A man known for being hardworking and loyal-with a tough spirit yet always ready for a good time Lloyd leaves behind a legacy rooted in service to others and love for those around him.

May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

Kelly & Todd,
My love to you both for the passing of Uncle Tuffy. As you both know how hard death hits your family, memories are held more dear to your heart, I know the passing of Dad left a hole in life as we´ve had two baby boys born since he passed he´ll never see.
Love to you! Darice

(Helen Smith) My memories of Lloyd start when I entered the 8th grade at Dairyland, not knowing anyone, he was my first friend. He introduced me to his good friend Ronald Smith, at my 16th birthday party, who later became my husband. He and Patty were part of our wedding. When we moved back to Chowchilla our families spent many happy times at the lake and camping, especially our trips to Baja Mexico, also many special family dinners and Holidays. We shared tears when Ronny died and again when Patty died. Now I'm crying for the loss of him, my good long time friend. May you rest in peace and be there to greet me along with Patty and Ronny when it is my time.

Tuffy you´ll be greatly missed as is your wife. You brought so much joy to our family. Our kids loved going to your house to ride the horses and everyone always loved having you around when we´re camping when George´s father died. You told him that you were his papa now and that meant so much to him and us. Thank you for being who you are. We love you and we will miss you from the Branco family.

Papa had a way of telling stories that made you feel like you were right there with him - it´s something I´ll always carry with me. He reminded us that honesty mattered most, and no matter what kind of trouble we got into, we always knew we could call him. He was our safe place, and he always will be.
