Lorraine Benda Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 16, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lorraine Louise Benda (Carpenter) of Garden Grove, IA on Friday, April 11, 2025 at the age of 70.

Lorraine was a devoted wife and mother. She married Mike Benda in 1974 and they started their life together near Tama, IA. They later moved to southcentral Iowa where they have remained. They raised four children and welcomed eleven grandchildren to the family. Grandchildren were Lorraine's pride and joy, spending as much time with them as she could. Sharing with them her love for animals and life in the country. Having raised dogs, cattle, horses, chickens, goats, she enjoyed her farm life and faithfully spent every summer at the county fair helping her children and grandchildren show off their hard work. Hard work was no stranger to Lorraine. Aside from caring for animals alongside her husband, she was a CNA for many years and graduated with her associate of nursing degree in 1998, as her own children graduated from high school and college. Then working at Decatur County Hospital as a Registered Nurse until her health would no longer allow it.

Lorraine is survived by her husband of 50 years, Michael; children: Edward Benda, Lacey (Dan) Paine, Becky (Justin) Savage, Rick (Leslie) Benda. Grandchildren: Alexis Benda, Kelsey Benda, Sydney Benda. Oliver Paine, Avery Houk, Cooper Paine. Clay Savage, Cole Savage, Carly Savage. Riley Benda, Paisley Benda.

A visitation will be held at Living Hope Church in Leon, IA on Friday, April 25th at 10:00am. Memorial service at 11:00am with lunch to follow.

Lorraine's selflessness left a big impact on her family and those around her. To further her love of children, animals, and 4-H, we ask in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: Decatur County 4-H, FFA Fair. These can be left at or mailed to First Interstate Bank in Leon, IA.

We were honored to know Lorraine the last few years of her life. Our son married her daughter,Lacey. She was a very special person. She always thought about what the people she knew were going through by sending flowers & cards when she was having her own health issues. Her face lit up whenever she saw us and I thought what a trooper she was. She will be missed greatly. God has blessed Lorraine by loving her and taking her into his special place in Heaven. All our love Lorraine.

I very much enjoyed sharing the title of Grandma of Riley and Paisley with this amazing woman. The love she showered on my daughter and our grandchildren was unmatched. I am so thankful that I took the time to remind her how special I thought she was and how much I loved her every single time I saw her. We never said goodbye without a bear hug. So thankful to have had her in my life.
