Marilyn Goeyvaerts Obituary

Marilyn Joan Goeyvaerts (McDonnell), age 87, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, in Bakersfield, California. Born on July 31, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, Marilyn lived a full and vibrant life marked by deep devotion to her family and a spirited engagement with the world around her.

Marilyn shared 67 wonderful years of marriage with her loving husband Ron. Together they built a strong and enduring family legacy. She is survived by her husband, Ron, and their children: Susan (Michael) McDermott, Steven (Marlene) Goeyvaerts, and Julie (Jon) Morris. Her eight grandchildren-Patrick (Ashley) McDermott, Kevin (Chloe) McDermott, Robert (Chandler) McDermott, Melissa (Dana) Hahlbeck, Jonathan Goeyvaerts, Chloe Goeyvaerts, Joshua (Katie) Morris, and Jaclyn (Brett) Cocagne-brought her immense joy. Marilyn was also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Caleb, Claire, Luke, Taylor, Molly, and Andrew. She also leaves behind her brothers-in-law, Frank Goeyvaerts and James Julien; as well as a wide circle of relatives and friends- all who will forever cherish her memory.

She was the eldest of thirteen children, and is lovingly remembered by her sisters Carol and Maureen and brothers Tom, Richard, Billy, and Pat. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents Lillian and Francis McDonnell; brothers Michael, Ed, Bob, George, John, and Terry; and her nephew Danny.

Marilyn had a remarkable ability to connect people with opportunities-a gift she honed during her years working in the classified advertising department at the San Jose Mercury News. Whether someone needed a job, a used car, or a place to live, Marilyn was often the first person they turned to for help. Her resourcefulness and generosity left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know her.

Beyond her professional life and family devotion, Marilyn found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved traveling to new places with Ron by her side and enjoyed attending jazz music festivals. Family gatherings were among her favorite occasions-moments where laughter flowed freely and memories were made over shared meals, glasses of wine, and See's candy.

Marilyn was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend- and above all-a steadfast presence in the lives of those she held dear. Her warmth and laughter will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
