Spencer Cofield, Sr. Obituary

Spencer Cofield Sr., passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, at the age of 89. He was born on November 4, 1935, in Tarboro, N.C. to the late Arlene Pittman Cofield and Jessie Cofield. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, and earned the Longevity Service Award and Good Conduct Medal. His assignments included McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, and London, where he welcomed his first child, Donna Richards, with the late Rosina Richards. After the military, he married the late Ophelia Knight Cofield and raised two children, Gwendolyn Marie Cofield and Spencer Jr., in the Edmondson Village area of Baltimore, MD. There, he was a very well-known barber for more than 50 years. After Ophelia died, he married Betty Anderson and moved to Elkridge, MD. He maintained his barbershop until he retired from full time work in 2021. He loved to "cut up" his customers, and his family, with jokes and verbal jabs. He was a sharp dresser, and enjoyed cooking Southern food like collard greens. He loved to watch sports, especially the Ravens and Orioles. He relished being around the dining room table with his children and grandchildren, sharing opinions of local and world affairs, as well as servings of cake and ice cream. Most of all, he adored his family and was a faithful member of Greater Destiny Christian Ministries. He was predeceased by brothers Leroy Cofield and James Cofield. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Betty, sister Indiana Turner, children Donna, Gwen and Spencer Jr., grandchildren Ashana Crichton (Tejan) and Matthew Richards, stepdaughter Cheryl Smith (Steve), step granddaughter April, and a host of family and friends. A viewing will be held Friday August 1, at Estep Brothers Funeral Home, 1300 Eutaw Pl., Baltimore, MD 21217 (Family from 3 - 4 pm; Public from 4 - 7 pm). His celebration of life service is Saturday August 2 at Greater Destiny Christian Ministries, 100 3rd Ave. SW, Glen Burnie, MD 21061 (Wake at 10 am; Service at 10:30 am). The interment is Monday, August 4, 10:45 am, at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery in Owings Mills, MD.
