Steve Grady Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2025.

Stephen Keith Grady - son, brother, husband, brother-in-law, father, uncle, father-in-law, grandfather, and all-around nice guy - passed away peacefully at his home in The Villages on June 6, 2025. Born December 1952 in San Francisco to Creighton and Marjorie Getz Grady, Steve had deep roots in California. He is a descendant of James and Mary Grady (Ireland) who emigrated to San Francisco in 1849 and Abraham and Sarah Getz (Prussia) who arrived in San Francisco in 1868. When he was three, the family moved to Burlingame where Steve went to school and eventually took up golf at Green Hills Country Club. Steve was a proud "Aggie," graduating from U.C. Davis in 1975.

Steve met his wife Carol (nee Cahill) in 1977, and they married in 1978. They settled in San Jose, ultimately finding a wonderful home in Evergreen where they raised their three daughters Erin, Lauren, and Megan, and made a large group of forever friends. Steve was a devoted husband and father who valued his family over all else. He enjoyed the girls' swim meets, soccer tournaments, and drama performances. Steve especially looked forward to their family vacations; Lake Tahoe and San Jose Family Summer Camp were a couple of his favorite destinations. He shared a love of music with his daughters, attending numerous Counting Crows and Barenaked Ladies concerts with them.

Steve's love of golf was second only to his love of family. In 1972 he became U.C. Davis's 1st All-American (Honorable Mention) in golf. Following graduation in 1975 he embarked on a EuroRail and backpacking trip to Europe with his college roommate, best friend and future best man, Cliff McAuliffe. After Cliff returned to the U.S. Steve fulfilled every golfer's dream by playing at St. Andrew's (a "cow pasture," as he described it). He had a wide group of golfing buddies who enjoyed their "Los Padres" golf trips to out of area courses. After Steve and Carol moved into The Villages in 2016, Steve joined the Men's Club Monday and Thursday groups, played on the Home-to-Home team against other private clubs and on the NCGA team.

Steve was an avid sports fan. He was passionate about the Warriors, Giants, 49ers, and Sharks. He loved watching March Madness each spring, especially when the Saint Mary's Gaels, Megan's alma mater, were participants. Many Sundays, Steve could be found watching the final round of a PGA tournament. He was also a big fan of the LPGA and enjoyed seeing local college golfers make it professionally.

Steve's gregarious nature made him a natural salesperson. After six years, first at Standard Brands and then Max Factor, he joined Nilfisk of America, where he rose to the position of Western Regional Manager. Steve and Carol enjoyed trips for many company sales meetings at various U.S. and Caribbean locales, the highlight being a 3-week trip to Denmark and Norway. Steve later joined Pacific Bell (AT&T), which allowed him more time at home with his family. Steve enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship of his coworkers and the opportunity to socialize with them after work and at monthly wine dinners.

Steve is survived by his wife Carol, daughters Erin Buck (Dan), Lauren Haas (Jonathan), and Megan Robledo (Chris), sister Marilyn Simonds and his four grandchildren (Alice, Jack, Abigail, Theodore) who called him "Poppy." Steve was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and faithful friend. He will be forever loved and greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 1 at The Villages. Please RSVP online at https://stevegrady-celebration.rsvpify.com for more information. Your response will help us plan appropriately.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was literally up in the Villages today grabbing some lunch with my son etc. Deep condolences and sympathy. Steve worked for me at YP many years ago in Sunnyvale CA at the time. I learned sooooo much from him and of course since I graduated from St. Mary's in 1990 we always talked hoops and Bay Area sports in general. He will be sorely missed.

Sincerely,
William B. Drury

I can only think of good things and good times whenever I think of Steve, so celebrating his life seems like something that everyone who met him would wish to do. To me, he was easygoing, open and quietly confident about his many talents in a way I could not help but like. I´m grateful that his, and his family´s, suffering can be laid to rest and we can focus on being grateful to have known him. Rest in peace, my friend.
