John Edward Teshima, 78, of Trail Creek passed away peacefully with his wife Carol and daughter Maralee at his side at the Center for Hospice Care Mishawaka on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
John had been living for the past two and a half years at Trail Creek Place Memory Care, where he was loved by the staff and residents.
John was born Feb. 8, 1947, in Madison, New Jersey, to the late John and Shirley Teshima. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol Teshima. Also surviving are his two loving children, Maralee (Luke) and John (Hui); grandchildren, Evelyn, Aiden, Calvin, Nelson, Gavin, Arebella, Addie and Ainslee; and siblings, Alexis Kimball, April (John) Teshima and Peter (Kathie) Teshima.
John received a bachelor's degree in history and Spanish from Rutgers University and a master's degree in history from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a life-long learner with varied interests, including swimming, tennis, baseball and golf. He also loved duplicate bridge and was a life master. He enjoyed time at the beach and being outdoors. John worked for many years in business in Chicago.
John's faith in the Lord was integral. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (NKJV, I John 3:16). A celebration of life service will be held later this summer at Friendship Botanic Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to La Porte County Meals on Wheels, where John was a volunteer for 10 years; to the Michigan City Humane Society, supporting his special love and care for indoor and outdoor rescue cats; or to the Michigan City Chamber Music Festival because of his love of music imparted by his piano-teaching mother.

Many good memories over 35 years in the same business with John. Always a good friend and respected underwriter. He could take a case and work up a 30 page Home Office submission like no one else. And so many golf outings and lunches talking about the commute from Michigan City.

One of few who gave help all of his life. A dear, best friend for 40 years. Both he and Carol shared good times with me and Gabriele my wife.
John and I loved Duplicate Bridge. All will miss him. Dennis and Gabriele Frazier.

With a tremendously heavy heart here is his bridge partner for decades. Visited him late last year, and making similar plans to see him again later this year. What shocking news from his wife, Carol, this was. I will meet him again, with Our Lord, not too long from now, I'm sure. Let's play bridge when we meet again, dear John.

I used to play tennis with John, who had a wicked serve and loved to compete. Carol and I started school together and I have known her for over 70 years. My condolences to the entire Teshimsa/Thate family.
