Virginia Schmitt Obituary

FITCHBURG – Virginia Ellen Schmitt was born October 15, 1934, in Aberdeen, S.D. She died on September 10, 2025, at the age of 90, in Fitchburg, Wis.
Virginia taught in Catholic elementary schools for 51 years, five as a principal. After that, she served as the resident manager of the Academy Apartments in Sinsinawa, Wis., for eight years.
Virginia was the tenth child of Anton and Katharine Schmitt. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Katharine Schmitt; brothers, John, Joseph and Eugene Schmitt; and sisters, Angela Bolan, Vera Grapp, Helen Babcock, Marie Schmitt, Rosemary Flint, Joanne Armstrong, and Chantelle Schmitt. Virginia is survived by her sisters, Alice Schmitt of W. St. Paul, Minn., and Sylvia Smith of Pipestone, Minn.; and brother, Anthony Schmitt of Green River, Wyo. Other survivors consist of numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 5313 Flad Ave., Madison, at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. Burial will take place at St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Tuesday.
