Manistee, MI
04/08/1961 - 06/28/2025
Grace Ann Marsh (Hendler), passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, at her home in Manistee, MI. Born on April 8, 1961, in Plainwell, Michigan, Grace lived 64 full and fearless years. While she was deeply loving and generous, it was her sharp wit, strong will, and unapologetic honesty that truly defined her. She left an indelible mark on everyone lucky enough to know her, through laughter, loyalty and an unshakable sense of self.
Grace was the cherished mother of Nicholas Chivis, Joshua Chivis, Lucas Duty, and Tara Chivis. She was an adoring grandmother to Riley Metzger and a beloved sister to Peter Smith. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she devoted herself to them with every fiber of her being.
Raised in a nurturing foster home by Kathy and Rod "Grumpy" Stebbins, Grace learned the true meaning of love and family. This foundation of care and support was something she carried forward into her own family life. She raised her four children with the same unwavering dedication and love she had known as a child, creating a home filled with laughter, learning, and love.
A proud member of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, Grace was an avid participant in local pow wows. She cherished the time spent traveling near and far to visit family and friends, finding these gatherings more than just social connections, they were vibrant expressions of her heritage and identity. These moments of community and tradition were deeply meaningful to her, and she took great pride in sharing them with her children.
Grace's interests painted a picture of a woman who cherished the simple beauty in the world. Her home was adorned with nicknacks of turtles, a testament to her fondness for these gentle creatures. She had a special affinity for the natural world, reflected in her love for eagle feathers, lilac flowers, tiger lilies, and dreamcatchers. Each item in her collection told a story, a memory that she held dear.
A big movie collector, Grace's shelves were filled with films that entertained and inspired. However, her passion for reading, especially the works of Stephen King, was unmatched. She often found herself lost in the pages of a good book, which was one of her favorite ways to unwind and escape into other worlds.
Grace's granddaughter, Riley, was the apple of her eye. Their bond was a source of immeasurable joy for Grace, and they shared countless precious moments that will be forever treasured.
Those who knew Grace will remember her for her fierce spirit and unwavering loyalty. She was direct some would call her blunt, strong-willed, passionate, and funny, with a dry wit that could light a room. Grace was a friend you could count on; her legacy is one of strength, humor, loyalty and the lasting impact she had on everyone lucky enough to know her.
A service will be held Monday July 7th at 2 p.m. at the Jowett Family Funeral Home.
