Donald Varney Obituary

Donald Jon Varney Sr.

November 8, 1953 - June 21, 2025

Merced, California - Donald Jon Varney Sr. was born on November 8, 1953, in Kent, England, and passed away peacefully at his home in Merced, California, on June 21, 2025, surrounded by family.

Don is lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Debora, and his children: Melissa, Elizabeth, Donald Jr., Colin, and Kevin. He will be forever cherished by his grandchildren, who were blessed to call him their grandfather.

Don answered the call to serve early in life. In 1972, he joined the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Chicago as a fireman until his honorable discharge in 1975. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for working on cars at John Roth Body Shop while preparing for a career in law enforcement. In January 1978, he earned an Associate of Arts degree in Administration of Justice from Merced College and went on to dedicate much of his life to protecting and serving his community.

Beyond his professional life, Don found great joy in fishing. A devoted angler, he entered tournaments whenever possible and proudly displayed a growing collection of trophies. His enthusiasm for the sport was matched only by his warm spirit and infectious laughter.

A private service for immediate family will be held on July 8, 2025, at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will follow in Merced, California.

His daughter Elizabeth Perry shared: "Dad, I would not be who I am today if it weren't for you. You are my best friend and will always be. I will always continue to look up to you, and I will miss you dearly. My heart will never be the same, as you have taken a part of it with you. I love you so much and miss you already."

Don was one of my mentors, and a brother to me always. Don had an infectious sense of humor and a rock-solid work ethic. I always looked up to him for guidance, and I attempted to attain and meet his very high, and unwavering standards over the years. Don actually did body work and painting on some of my vehicles which was always flawless and perfect. Don was definitely a perfectionist, and he always maintained a high level of professionalism. Don had huge forearms. Someone said to me that he had forearms that of the legendary 'Popeye', which I would have to agree. I miss him and I love him very much. My greatest hope is to spend some time with him on the next plane of existence, and we can joke and fish together in a heavenly lake and just reflect on our times together.

It was a sad day to learn my friend and fellow co-worker had passed away. I
worked with Don for several years and learned so much from him. Don was a true professional and was very proud of his service to the department and the community. Don was proud of his family and would often tell you what his kids and grand kids were up to. Don loved to bass fish and was the one who got me into it. We would spend several hours in his garage talking about fishing and then would go fishing the next day. Upon returning from fishing, we would again talk about the day over a couple of beers. I made it a point to stop by and visit with him anytime I was back home. Big D, you will be missed. RIP

Hi I first met Don at John Roth Chevrolet. He was an auto body mechanic, and I had brought my patrol unit in for some repair. He would eagerly talk to me about his desire to be in law enforcement. When he was sworn in we worked together in patrol. Later we worked together in the traffic division. He was a good friend. I knew him to be an excellent police officer, he loved his family, he loved his career and of course bass tournaments.
I often called on him to teach accident investigation, later when he became a detective I would call on him to teach the rookies crime scene collection and protection. All I am trying to say is I will miss him and I thank the good lord for letting me to know him. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Rest in peace my friend and brother in law enforcement. Steve

Was a mentor and friend. I had the opportunity to work with Don for many years. He was a dedicated police officer and a major asset to MPD. Mostly, he was committed to his family and always put them first. Going to miss you Don. Curtis Gorman
