Phyllis Snider
Our mom, Phyllis Snider, vowed to make it to her 100th birthday and she did! We had a wonderful celebration of her long and memorable life with friends and family on June 18th. She received well over 200 cards from friends, family and acquaintances near and far, and we thank everyone who thought of her with a card, a note, a phone call, or a bouquet of flowers.
Phyllis was born in Quincy, Michigan on June 18, 1925, to Ezra and Marguerite (Ambrose) Dean. She lived in Coldwater, Michigan and attended Fiske Rural School through the 8th grade. She graduated from Coldwater High School in 1942. Phyllis attended Western Michigan University, graduating in 1947 with a Bachelor's Degree and Elementary Teaching Certificate. After graduating, she taught in the Dearborn Public Schools prior to her marriage to Mervin O. Snider, Elkton, on June 24, 1950 at the Coldwater Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on September 16, 2013.
Her teaching career in Huron County included Elkton Elementary and North Huron Schools, completing 15 years, before taking a position as a School Social Worker through the Huron Intermediate School District. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1963 with a Master of Arts Degree. Phyllis retired from HISD in 1984. Following retirement, she served on the Huron County Chapter of American Cancer Society Board, the Thumb Industries Board, held offices in the Huron County Chapter of Retired School Personnel and was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church where she was active on many committees and served in a variety of areas. She thoroughly enjoyed helping with Vacation Bible School, visiting the elderly and home bound and the hospitalized of the church. In retirement, Merv and Phyllis traveled, spending the winter months for many years in Sedona, AZ.
