Margaret Smith Obituary

Margaret Carrie Hurlock Smith, 96, passed away at her home on Cedar Lane Farm in Kennedyville, Maryland on July 6, 2025. It gives our family peace knowing she died in a place that she cherished and loved. Margaret was an only child born to the late Walter Alpheus Hurlock and Kathryn Myers Hurlock in Easton, Maryland. She graduated from Chestertown High School in 1947 in the eleventh grade, the highest level of public education at that time. She was the beloved wife of 48 years to the late Willard Lester Smith. Together, they farmed and raised their four daughters while enjoying every bit of rural living in Kent County. They especially enjoyed traveling together to Hawaii, Costa Rica, the Panama Canal, and many other places. Margaret was also a retired mail carrier of 20 years for Kennedyville's United States Postal Service. She enjoyed living in a community where she knew almost everyone for generations. She grew up, married, and baptized her children as a member of the Presbyterian Church of Kennedyville. Many years after its closing, she became a founding member of the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown. Margaret also enjoyed volunteering at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital for many years. She always appreciated all of the love and support her church and community gave her throughout her long life. The most important thing in Margaret's life was her family. She is survived by her four daughters, Margaret Ellen (Thaddeus) Kalmanowicz, Leslie (Harry Lattomus) Merriken Hoch, Bonnie (the late Richard) McClure, and Crystal (Randolph) Smith Stanton. She is cherished and remembered by her six grandchildren, Michelle (Nicholas) Feracci, Amanda (Patrick) Pflaumer, Robert (Amy) Crow, Tyler (Erin) Gale, Caroline Stanton, and Carter (Katherine) Stanton; her three step-grandchildren Jana (Gabriel) Stockhausen, Erin Kalmanowicz Aguilar, and Michael Kalmanowicz. She is also treasured by her fourteen great-grandchildren: Madison and Dominic Feracci, Peyton and Ryan Pflaumer, Benjamin and Brody Crow, Briar Rose Gale, Jonathan, Eli and Tristan Stockhausen, Chase and Zane Aguilar, Mitchell and Brayden Kalmanowicz. Her unwavering support and pure joy in loving us all will be deeply missed. Margaret loved animals, especially her cats. She adopted many throughout the years and found happiness in caring for them. She leaves behind her feline companion named Snuggles. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the volunteers of Meals on Wheels for their service, which allowed her to live independently on the farm as she wished. We also thank the Miller Family, especially Kevin, for their years of dedication to farming Cedar Lane. Thanks to Carole Mulford for always lifting her spirits. Margaret thought the world of each of you.
