Mildred L. (Hoots) Cummins
Roodhouse - Mildred L. Hoots Cummins, 101, of Roodhouse, died Thursday, July 10, 2025. She was born east of Roodhouse on February 7, 1924, the daughter of Henry Travis and Trannie King Hoots. She married J. Floyd Cummins on March 9, 1944. He preceded her in death on June 9, 2010.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Cummins (John Clark) of White Hall, granddaughter, Katy Cummins of Springfield, MO, grandson, Jimmy Cummins and daughter-in-law, Marlene Cummins both of Waverly and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Jim Cummins, sister, Ruby Gilmore and brother, Lester Hoots.
Mildred graduated from Roodhouse High School in 1942 and taught in a country school for a couple of years. After her marriage, she embraced the life of a farm wife. She raised chickens and sold eggs through the local grocer, had large vegetable and flowers gardens, sewed clothing ranging from doll clothes to wedding dresses and was a prolific baker and cook. It was not unusual to find five pies cooling in the kitchen. Through all endeavors, she proudly embodied her homemaker profession.
She was an active in Home Extension, taught Sunday School, volunteered at the Food Pantry, chaired the Church Deaconess Group, caned chairs, reupholstered furniture, made ceramics, quilts and beautiful embroidery. She led an all girls 4H Club and required each one to learn how to sew and bake, no exceptions.
Her grandchildren were her greatest source of pride and joy. Her enduring legacy will be her contagious and joyful laugh and her irrepressible and loving spirit.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at the First Baptist Church in Roodhouse with burial to follow at White Hall Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:30 pm on Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to Roodhouse First Baptist Church, Deaconess Group, 220 Worcester St., Roodhouse, IL.
