Agnes L. Hockgeiger, 97, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Wabash General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 12, 1928 in Mount Carmel, the daughter of Leo P. and Edith C. (Tennis) Keepes. She married Richard K. "Dick" Hockgeiger on November 4, 1950 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church and together they enjoyed sixty-eight years of marriage centered on their faith and family, until his passing on February 19, 2019.
Agnes will be lovingly remembered as a devoted wife, cherished mother, proud grandmother, beloved sister, and dear friend. She had a sweet and gentle spirit, and the love for her family was at the center of her life. She took great pride in her family and treasured every moment spent with them. An artistic and creative soul, Agnes enjoyed crocheting and crafting ceramics, often making thoughtful gifts for those she held dear. She found peace and joy in the outdoors, especially in tending to her flowers, which she nurtured with care. A proud St. Louis Cardinals fan, she loved following baseball and sharing spirited conversations about the game with her loved ones. Agnes shared a special bond with her parrot, Dusty, who is over thirty years old. Agnes was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Her kindness and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Agnes will be lovingly remembered by her four children, Tara (Danny) Reeves of Heflin, Louisiana, Tim (Donna) Hockgeiger, Julie Tennes and Kent (Ronda) Hockgeiger all of Mount Carmel, Illinois; sixteen grandchildren, Erin (Kevin) Watts, Karrie (David) Fortenberry, Robert (Brittany) Reeves, Hilary (Kendall) Guillot, David Myers, Stephanie Myers, Allison (Diego) Lopez, Natalie (Cory) Schraner, Andrea (Quintin) Philipson, Martin (Cami) Tennes, Emily Tennes, Ashley (Brian) Smith, Ryan (Shelby) Hockgeiger, Kasey (James) Gill, Grant Hockgeiger, Haley (Sampson Margelin) Hockgeiger; twenty-six great grandchildren, Michael (Zoe) Watts, Christopher Watts, Nolan Watts, Jude Fortenberry, Asher Fortenberry, Mercy Fortenberry, Sawyer Guillot, Annie Guillot, Alexis Finch, Logan Myers, Collin Myers, Violet Miller, Ben Miller, Ezra Miller, Andrew Schraner, Charlie Schraner, Otto Tennes, Zoey Smith, Reggie Smith, Aubren Hockgeiger, Isabelle Hockgeiger, Maverick Hockgeiger, Lila Hockgeiger, Ryleigh Gill, Cooper Gill, and Huxley Gill; one great-great grandchild, Millie Finch; brother, Eugene (Judy) Keepes; sister, Marilyn Harris; sister in law, Helen Keepes; many loved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son in law, Martin Tennes; brothers, Howard, Bernard, Norman, John L. and Victor Keepes; sister, Bertha Mae Kieffer; sisters in law, Phyllis and Shirley Keepes; brothers in law, Lewis Kieffer and John Harris.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a Visitation from 4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2025, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home. A Rosary Service will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 7, 2025, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Robert Zwilling, and Deacon Jim Keepes officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Agnes' memory to St. Mary's School or Residential Hospice. Envelopes will be at the funeral home or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863.
