Russell Alan Nichols was born on September 29, 1953, in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Russell Wayne and Gertrude (Mentzer) Nichols. He was raised on a farm outside of Dunlap, Iowa and graduated high school there in 1972. After graduation Alan served in the United States Army until he was honorably discharged and went home to manage the family farm. After that he drove truck for several years and was known for bringing home a souvenir piggy bank back from every state he traveled to for his mother.

Alan had a very competitive nature and loved to compete in tractor pulls and mud drags with “Old Greenie”. He also enjoyed reading and acquired enough books over the years to have his own library in his house. Alan treasured his niece and nephews and was affectionately known by them as “Uncle Oop”.

Alan died on June 30,2025, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 71 years, nine months and one day.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia Ann Nichols; brother, Steven Nichols; and brother-in-law, Robert Brummer. He is survived by his siblings, Kevin Nichols of Dunlap, Lori Brummer of Denison and Karen (Delbert) Schmidt of Denison; three nephews, one niece, five great nephews and one great niece; and many other relatives and friends.
