Albert L. "Bert" Austin, 93, of Hatteras, NC, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. A funeral service will be held at Hatteras United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Amanda Hedden and Rev. Dwight Burrus officiating. A visitation will be held at Hatteras United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Interment will follow at the Family Cemetery in Hatteras.
Bert was born in Hatteras on October 8, 1931, to Ernest L. and Kate Harrell Austin. He was a proud veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and an Atomic Hydrogen Bomb Veteran. Bert retired from the U.S. Air Force after twenty years of service (1950-1970) and continued to serve his community as a member of the Hatteras Volunteer Fire Department (1972-1994) and as Sheriff of Dare County (1982-2002).
He was a dedicated member of the Masons, Scottish Rite, and Shriners, as well as a lifelong member of numerous veterans' organizations and civic groups.
Bert is preceded in death by his siblings; Ernest Desmond Austin, Decatur H. Austin, Sr (and wife, Olive S. Austin), Minnie A. Burrus (and husband, William "Bill" Burrus), David F. Austin (and wife, Ola B. Austin), and Avis A. Davis (and husband, Charles W. Davis). Also, his three nephews: William Dale Burrus, Charles W. Davis, Jr., and Gary Austin.
He also leaves behind many nephews, nieces, and other dear friends from all over the world.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the construction fund of Hatteras United Methodist Church, 57665 North Carolina Hwy 12, Hatteras, NC 27943 or Little Grove United Methodist Church, 52859 Piney Ridge Rd, Frisco, NC 27936.
