Allan Horwich died peacefully at home at age 81 on July 1, 2025. After successfully battling multiple myeloma for 20 years, it was an affront to be felled by pancreatic cancer in just five months. Allan is survived by his wife, Carolyn Allen Horwich, with whom he shared more than fifty years of a loving marriage and friendship. He is survived by son Ben (Amy Tovar) Horwich and daughters Diana (Jeremy) Diller, Eleanor (John Crusoe) Moccari, and Flannery (Jeffrey) Goldberg, and ten charming grandchildren, Jack and Carolina Horwich; Emily and Simone Diller; Caleb, Leah, and Nora Moccari; and Jane, Reid, and Wesley Goldberg. Allan and his brother John (Pamela) Horwich were raised in Omaha, Nebraska by their parents Joseph and Bernice Horwich. He attended Princeton University (A.B. cum laude 1966) and the University of Chicago School of Law (J.D. 1969).
In 1969 Allan joined the law firm Schiff, Hardin, Waite, Dorschel & Britton (now ArentFox Schiff) in Chicago, where he practiced continuously until he retired in 2024. Even as he continued to practice, Allan began teaching at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in 1999, offering courses in securities and corporate law. He published numerous scholarly articles, particularly on the law of insider trading, in the Business Lawyer and the Securities Regulation Law Journal, and he was a commentator on securities law and corporate governance issues for outlets such as Bloomberg, Forbes, Fortune, the Los Angeles Times, and PBS. In 2023 Allan retired from teaching as an Emeritus Professor of Practice at Northwestern.
He liked to travel afoot as much as possible, and while walking to and from work he often was complimented on his dapper professional appearance, accessorized with snappy bow ties, suspenders, and seasonally appropriate hats. He was a runner for many years and in his fifties he ran the Chicago Marathon three times.
Allan's hobbies were the world's foremost philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Wittgenstein's Vienna, which Allan visited 16 times between 2005 and 2023. He narrowly avoided being charged residency fees for the number of hours he spent perusing pastries in Vienna's Café Central.
Private graveside service on Wednesday, July 9th at 11:00 a.m. The service will be livestreamed on Allan's website at www.goldmanfuneralgroup.com. In lieu of flowers, Allan's family requests that you join them for a memorial gathering to be held later this summer and choose at least one book from his sprawling library.
