LOUDONVILLE: Alvin Raymond Steffen passed away peacefully on Monday, June 16, 2025, in Akron Select Specialty Hospital surrounded by his family. He was 82.
He was born at home on December 11, 1942, in Holgate, Ohio, to parents Raymond & Lavina (Eiden) Steffen. Alvin graduated from Miller City High School in the class of 1960 and continued his education at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, IN, before attending the Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1964, he was drafted into the US Air Force, where he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a medic. Alvin was honorably discharged in 1968.
Alvin worked as a Mechanical Engineer and Draftsman at Rosemount Analytical, where he spent several years until his retirement in 2003.
He was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Loudonville, where he sang in the choir and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Alvin was passionate about the Bikes For Kids organization in Loudonville, always ensuring that no child in the community went without a bike. He loved to spend his free time at the Loudonville Public Library, tinkering with gadgets, solving puzzles, or spending time outdoors. Alvin was an avid outdoorsman who loved surrounding himself with nature, studying nature, or hiking. He was described as being kind, generous, a loving grandfather, never knowing a stranger (because they always became friends), and as the "Wanderer". Alvin had the gift of wandering, always moving from place to place to enjoy what was around him, particularly in nature.
He is survived by his mother Lavina Steffen; his wife Ruth Steffen; his children Melony Steffen, Yvette (Kevin) Hyatt, Christine Evans, Valerie (Ed) Ziringer, Michael (Elizabeth) Steffen, and Bryan (Andrea) Steffen; his grandchildren Miranda Royer, Tyler Evans, Stephanie (Joe) Gonser, Kyle Ziringer, Austin Ziringer, Alex Steffen, and Emma (Riley) Dunham; many great grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; his siblings Rose Nartker, Marleen (Ken) Westrick, Sharon Meyer, Edwin (Elaine) Steffen, Carol (Jim) Wagner, Joyce (Phil) Romano; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alvin was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Steffen, and his brother-in-law, Jerry Nartker.
The Steffen family will receive friends on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home-Lindsey Chapel in Loudonville. A funeral service will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church, 220 E. Butler Street, Loudonville, OH, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. Father James Winings will officiate, and burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.
Contributions in Alvin's memory may be made to St. Peter Catholic Church, 220 E Butler Street, Loudonville, Ohio, 44842.
