In Memoriam: Anthony Barbieri Jr.
October 2, 1940 – June 24, 2025
Anthony Barbieri Jr., from Alpine, NJ, beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, passed peacefully on June 24, 2025, in the comforting presence of his loving family. Born in the Bronx on October 2, 1940, to Anthony Sr. and Stella Barbieri, and raised with his older brother Donald, Anthony's formative years were shaped by the vibrancy of his St. Ann's Avenue neighborhood, his Catholic upbringing, and the enduring values of hard work, humility, and service. His lifelong affection for the Big Apple found expression in his unwavering loyalty to the Yankees, the Rangers, and Broadway.
A proud alumnus of Cardinal Hayes High School and Manhattan College, Anthony earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Marketing. At Manhattan, he immersed himself in campus life and forged lifelong friendships through the Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity. That brotherhood remained central throughout his life, culminating in the establishment of a scholarship foundation to help students in financial need access the transformative opportunity of higher education.
Anthony served his country with quiet dedication, first in the New York State National Guard, then in the U.S. Army Reserves. His professional journey began with Macy's executive training program and led him to become a buyer for the flagship store's famed Cellar Department. Eventually, he took the helm of the family's shoe and leather business, leading it for more than 50 years, expanding to over 15 locations across the tri-state area, and even collaborating with Broadway's creative community on costume and set design, an enterprise where craftsmanship met culture.
More than any professional achievement, Anthony's deepest fulfillment came from his family. A providential meeting at Rye Playland led him to the love of his life, Rosina. Their marriage of 61 years was a testament to enduring love, partnership, and mutual devotion. Together they raised three children instilling in them the same values of kindness, faith, civic duty, and perseverance that guided Anthony's own life.
He is survived by his wife Rosina; his daughter Laura and her husband Raphael, and their children Raph and Gabrielle; his son Anthony III, his wife Anna, and their daughters Olivia and Mia; and his daughter Christina. To them, and to many others, Anthony was a steady and reassuring presence, one who listened, uplifted, and inspired with humility and grace.
Anthony's life was one of service. He volunteered with the Alpine Fire Department for over 40 years, many as Association President. A devoted parishioner of St. Thérèse of Lisieux Church in Cresskill, he served as a Eucharistic Minister and attained the Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus, the highest honor of patriotic and spiritual commitment in the Order. His faith was lived through action: preparing meals for the hungry, embodying generosity, and bringing joy each Christmas as the community's beloved Santa Claus.
Anthony's abiding gratitude for life was matched by his deep desire to make the world more just, more generous, and more kind. His legacy is a living one, rooted in faith, family, and service.
