Arthur Michael "Mick" Smith, 79, was born August 6, 1946, in Hay Springs, Nebraska, to Marle D. and Laurine T. (Brown) Smith. He passed away on August 8, 2025, in Newberg, Oregon, after a long illness.

Mick grew up in Hay Springs and attended school there, later studying at Chadron Prep and Chadron High School. After a brief time serving in the U.S. Army, he made his home along the West Coast.

In 1964, Mick married Linda Johnson in California, and together they welcomed a son, Kevin Todd, and a daughter, Jennifer Irene. Later, he married Pam (Donohue) Smith and lovingly adopted her daughter, Sonya.

Over the years, Mick worked as an electronics technician and engineer. He took great pride in designing corporate computer systems and often reflected on the days when they were built to last-before cost-cutting measures changed the industry.

Music was one of Mick's lifelong passions. A gifted trumpet and guitar player, he wrote and performed his own songs, sharing them in retirement and nursing homes around Portland.

Mick was known as a dreamer, full of bright ideas-some practical, some whimsical, all uniquely his. In his later years at the nursing home, he became a friend to many, visiting fellow residents daily and lifting spirits with a kind word or a song.

He is survived by his daughters, Sonya Edwards and Jennifer Wesley; grandson, River Skrenes; sister-in-law, Marilyn Smith; a nephew, Dustin & Amber Smith and family; a niece, Stacy (Smith) Graham and son; and special friends Michael and Bonnie Mauck and their family in Portland, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marle D. and Laurine Smith; wife, Pam Smith; son, Kevin Skrenes; and brother, Marle G. (Chip) Smith.

Mick will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron, Nebraska, at a later date. In lieu of flowers or a memorial, the family asks that you honor Mick's kind heart by doing something thoughtful for someone in need.
