Barbara Ann Hawkins, age 73, peacefully transitioned to eternal rest on June 17, 2025, surrounded by love and grace. Born on January 30, 1952, in Norfolk, Virginia, Barbara was the beloved daughter of the late George Cary Hawkins and Emma Lawrence Hawkins.
A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Barbara began a distinguished career at Ma Bell, now Verizon, where she worked with dedication and pride until her retirement in Riverhead, New York. In her later years, she resided in Chesapeake, Virginia, and eventually settled in Waldorf, Maryland.
Barbara's life was marked by deep faith, unwavering love for her family, and a lifelong dedication to serving others. She had a heart for giving and deep-rooted compassion that guided every part of her life. Known for her commitment to ensuring no child or elderly person went without a meal, she was a quiet champion for the overlooked and underserved. Barbara had a firm belief in not wasting food and taught everyone around her the importance of gratitude, resourcefulness, and sharing. Whether stretching a meal to feed more mouths or offering her time and kitchen table conversation without hesitation, Barbara led with kindness, a joke, and a smile.
Her warmth, her laughter, her wisdom, and her fierce devotion to those she loved will never be forgotten. As we celebrate her life, we take comfort in knowing that Barbara is now reunited with her loved ones and resting peacefully in the eternal embrace of God.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her cherished sister, Henrietta Harriett "Fuzzy" Hawkins, and her devoted brother, William Webster "Webbie" Hawkins. She leaves to celebrate her life and legacy her loving brothers, George C. Hawkins Jr. and Larry E. Hawkins (June), and her loving sisters, Evelyn E. Morris, Gwendolyn E. Hawkins, and Phyllis A. Pinero (Rene). Her legacy continues through a host of treasured nieces and nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends who loved her dearly.
