Betty Josephine Cates, age 90 of Waverly, Tennessee passed away peacefully on September 14, 2025. She was born in Corinth, Mississippi to the late A.C. And Ella Pannell.
She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was kindhearted and quick witted; she loved her four legged friends and playing bingo. She cherished her family and friends and caregivers who became her extended family.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Ramona (Travis) Patterson of McEwen, Tennessee; grandchildren, Tyler (Jenny) Patterson of New Johnsonville, TN, Chase Patterson (Peyton Mohler) of McEwen, TN, Dawn (Austin) Cranfill, and Josh Grooms.; great grandchildren, Etta Jo Patterson, Abby Cranfill, Hailey Grooms, Hunter Grooms, Skylar Grooms, Destiny Grooms, and Grace Grooms; and brother, Gene Pannell (Betsy) of White House, TN.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Evert Pannell, Curtis Pannell and Bill Pannell; sisters, Jewel Jones and Helen Sojourner; and her children, Wanda Grooms and Gary Brown.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Luff-Bowen Funeral Home in Waverly, beginning at 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M. with Bro. Wilson Spencer officiating the service. Burial to follow at Memphis Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens at 3:00 P.M. (3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133)
