Betty was born January 16, 1943 in Montgomery County to the late Edgar Thaddeus Byrd and Betty Virginia Gardner Byrd. She was a 1961 graduate of Mount Gilead High School and took secretarial courses at Pfeiffer College. She put those learned skills to work while her husband was stationed in Wiesbalden, Germany and then went on to work for two, Two Star Generals at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. After returning to her beloved town of Mount Gilead in the 1980's she went to work and retired in 2016, as an Executive Secretary of McRae Industries.

Betty was very family oriented and loved being a grandmother. She and her husband enjoyed feeding birds, watching butterflies and traveling in Germany during his military career there and then to Florida, the beaches and mountains. She was very talented as was obvious in her home interior decor and her ability to do floral arrangements. Betty dressed and wore her hair and makeup immaculately at all times.
