Betty Ann Metzger was called to her heavenly home on December 27th, 2024. Funeral services will be Tuesday, 12-31-24 at 10 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church of rural Dimock. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, 12-30-24 with a prayer service starting at 7 p.m. at Wills Funeral Home in Mitchell SD.
Betty Ann was born November 24,1931 to August and Martha Plamp at their farm home in rural Corsica. She was baptized as a preemie in the family home and confirmed at Blooming Valley, a sister church of St. John Lutheran Church of rural Dimock. Betty attended grade school in rural Douglas County and then graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. She attended Southern State Teachers College at Springfield, SD and Notre Dame Academy at Mitchell, earning her teaching certificate. She taught rural schools in Davison and Douglas Counties for 7 years.
On July 8, 1953, she married Vernon Metzger at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Dimock. After Vernon's return from the Korean Conflict, they farmed east of Corsica.
Betty lived a full and active life. She was a busy farm wife, mother, gardener, and loved tending her milk cows and chickens. No matter how busy her days were, after morning chores she wrote countless get well and birthday cards with detailed letters to friends and neighbors before the mailman arrived. Betty was an amazing cook and baker, and was known for her homemade breads, rolls, and the family favorite peanut bars. She also crafted her own lemonade iced tea concoction.
Betty was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church. She was an avid lifelong learner and enjoyed teaching youth Sunday School, before teaching adult Sunday School for many years. She was active in the St. John's Circle, enjoyed directing LYO plays, and later wrote and performed monologues depicting Bible characters. After Betty's eyesight failed, she began cutting and looping plastic shopping bags and winding the long bands of plastic into tight balls the size of basketballs. She then gave them to her friend Carolyn Goldammer who crocheted the balls into sleeping mats for the homeless in Sioux Falls. Together this team made over 500 mats before Betty's health declined and she could no longer loop.
Grateful for sharing her life include her son, Russell and wife Doris of Corsica, their children Nathan Metzger, Adams, NE and special friend Amanda Champagne, Lincoln NE, Megan and husband, Brian Vilhauer, Corsica, and Mallory Park of Sioux Falls. Betty's daughter Donna and husband Jeff Gerlach of Stickney, their children KayLa and husband Paul Berndt, Parkston, and Kyle and wife Shae Gerlach of Mt. Vernon, 13 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Norma Assmus, Carol Metzger, and Billie Madsen.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Metzger, father and mother August and Martha Plamp, infant brother Aurther, sister Florence Moke, father and mother-in-law William and Alvina Metzger, 6 brothers-in-law, and 2 sisters-in-law.
