Nawyn, Betty Jean, age 79, of Paterson, on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
Born in Paterson, Betty grew up in Prospect Park and then resided in Paterson for the last 20 years. Throughout her life Betty was a hard worker, living a life of service. She had been a waitress at Puzo's in Hawthorne and with the family catering business; she used her musical talent as an organist and choir director for many local churches over the years. In her spare time Betty enjoyed making and selling crafts, especially crocheting. She also loved music, playing cards, and collecting Barbies, but her favorite activity by far was spending time with her grandchildren. She was a life-long member of the Christian Reformed Church, and a graduate of Eastern Christian Schools and Passaic County College. She was very proud of her classic house, and counted sending her daughters to college as her greatest achievement.
Betty was the beloved mother of Julianne Bello and her husband Giuseppe Leone of Morristown, Peggy Askew and her husband Sean of Franklin, Elizabeth Bello of Paterson, and the late Daniel. Grandmother of Tristan, Quintin, and Lillian. Sister of Anita Schelhaas and her husband Paul, Linda Algera, Bonnie Rodenburg, Gwen Lineweaver and her husband Tom, and the late Edwin Nawyn. She is also survived by several dear nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne. Cremation will take place privately. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Sunday from 12:00 – 3:00pm.
Betty has been a breast cancer survivor for over 25 years. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation in her memory.
