On the third week of June 2025, Bruce George Wheeler of Auburn California, passed away in his home at the age of 79. He was born on March 21, 1946, in Freeport, New York, to Leonard Gallop Wheeler and Dorothy "Ducky" Lehnen Wheeler. Bruce was the middle child of Leonard and Ducky, with one older brother, Russell, and one younger brother, Roger. The three boys grew up together in Massapequa, Long Island, sharing countless adventures in, on, and under the salt water with their family. From a very young age, Bruce had a deep love of the outdoors, especially the water and boats. He loved nothing more than to be out snow skiing all winter, or water skiing all summer - both of which he did with expert skill and ardent passion.
Upon finishing high school, Bruce attended Lehigh University, where he graduated with a Master's in Electrical Engineering. It was during this time that he first discovered what would become his lifelong passion and profession: computer programming. In 1968, he made the decision to move West to California, following in the footsteps of his parents and younger brother, Roger.
Shortly after moving to California, he began working at Hewlett-Packard as a computer programmer, where he built a highly successful career that spanned over 30 years, culminating in his retirement. Bruce enjoyed working with his hands as much as with his mind, applying his engineering background and keen intellect to the design and construction of his own home, just West of Silicon Valley. He eventually transferred to Hewlitt Packard's Roseville office and began construction on a 2nd house in Auburn (this time with a bit more help), which is where he resided for the rest of his life. Though Bruce never married, in 2002 Bruce met Sandy Duffy, who would be his significant other for the remainder of his life.
Bruce was known for his kind, calm, and gentle manner, his generous nature, and his practical and pragmatic approach to life. He was a devoted son and brother, a loyal friend, and a supportive and caring partner; a true giant among men. He will be deeply missed by his family and by the numerous close friends whose lives he touched over the years.
Bruce is survived by significant other Sandra Duffy, brothers Roger Wheeler (Christa Valentin) and Russell Wheeler (Peggy Lentz), Cousins Lori Harvey (Robert Sagehorn) & Anne Gerdes, Nephews Brandon Wheeler (Julee Wheeler), Ian Gerdes, Leon Valentin (Else Valentin), Nieces Tara Little (Tony Little), Darian Duce (Eva Duce), Naima Van Gelderen (Casey Van Gelderen), Grand-nephews Wyatt Little, Gauge Little and Cooper James Valentin, and Grand-nieces Zoe Little and Danica Wheeler, plus far too many close friends to list.

I lived in the residence hall at Lehigh with Bruce in the 1960s....and have very fond memories of him. His nickname was Huey; he was gentle and loyal; I don't remember him ever being mean or nasty to anyone. He was tough, strong, athletic, competitive, smart, always up for fun, loved college wrestling and intramural sports. Bruce was a good man. I'm very sad he's passed away.

Bruce (Huey) and I went to Lehigh together and we both lived in the same residence . Huey was zany, smart, athletic, and a team player. He was a wonderful person and it brings tears to think he is gone. Buffalo
