Byron A. ("Gus") Allen, Jr, 65-year resident of Tenafly, NJ, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, after 93 years of a self-expressed "blessed life." Gus loved life and all his many friends and family members.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mabel W. Allen, his three children and their families: Byron, his wife, Tami, and their son, Tyler, of Greenwich, CT; Lesley, her husband, Robert Woolfolk, and their daughter, Katie, of Princeton, NJ; and Earle, his wife, Kelli, and their daughter, Vivian of Hoboken, NJ. Gus was predeceased by his father, Byron Allen; his mother, Clara Louise (Davis) Allen; his brother, Robert Allen; and sister, Jane Hall.
Gus was born in Great Barrington, MA, went to New Hampton School, Dartmouth College, and the Tuck School of Business. He interrupted his college years to serve for four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After receiving his MBA, he moved to New York City where he worked first for Shields & Company and later for Deutsche Bank, as an investment advisor. It was in New York where he met his wife, Mabel, and the two soon moved out to Englewood and then on to Tenafly. Maintaining a spirit of adventure throughout their lives, Gus and Mabel moved to Portland, OR, for a couple of years while Gus worked for a small biotech startup after he had left the investment business.
In addition to being a devoted husband and father, Gus was a very active member of the community. He coached all three of his children's youth soccer teams, served on Tenafly's Planning Board, served on the Board of Governors and as the President of the Englewood Field Club, served on the vestry for St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Englewood, and was a long-time member of the Tenafly Rotary Club. As an active alumnus of Dartmouth College, he relished his involvement as a fundraiser and as an alumni interviewer. For weekend fun, Gus enjoyed playing tennis, paddle tennis, and golf. He was a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox since childhood. Also, musically inclined, he played various instruments and especially cherished the evenings when a band played, and he could put on his dancing shoes.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 20, 12 noon, at Church of the Atonement in Tenafly, NJ, to which all are invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gus's name to New Hampton School in New Hampton, NH (www.newhampton.org/giving), or to Dartmouth College (www.alumni.dartmouth.edu/make-gift).
