Carla Hayes Obituary

Carla Hayes, 87, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, passed away on July 4th, 2025, at LB Broen Home, under the compassionate care of Vivie Hospice. True to her spunky, independent spirit, she chose to leave this world on Independence Day- a fitting farewell for a woman who lived life with grit, grace, and a twinkle in her eye.

Carla was born at home in Brainerd, Minnesota, in 1938 to Ronald and Roma Nichols. From an early age, she developed a love for cooking, gardening, and traveling-passions that would shape her life.

She was the proud owner of The Farmer's Table restaurant in Dent, MN, where her hearty meals and warm caramel rolls became a beloved fixture in the community. Later, she brought her culinary talents to Texas, where she ran a pie trailer that quickly became a local favorite. Of all her creations, her blueberry pie-flaky, sweet, and made with love-was her signature dish and her personal favorite.

Among the many dishes that filled her kitchen with warmth, her caramel rolls were a family favorite-soft, gooey, and made with the kind of love only a mother like Carla could bake in.

Carla's gardens were as vibrant as her personality. She spent countless hours tending to her plants, harvesting fresh produce, and canning the fruits of her labor. Her pantry was a rainbow of jars filled with pickles, jams, and sauces-each one a testament to her dedication and love of the land.

But Carla's spirit couldn't be contained by kitchen walls or garden rows. She loved to travel, and her adventures took her across the country and beyond. Whether it was a road trip to a new town, a scenic drive through the countryside, or a spontaneous detour to chase a sunset, Carla found joy in the journey and stories in every stop.

In her final chapter, Carla found comfort and companionship at LB Broen Home. She often spoke with deep affection for the staff there, whose kindness, humor, and attentive care brought her peace and joy. Her family is forever grateful for the love and dignity they gave her in her final days.

She will be deeply missed by her children, multiple grandchildren, great- grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, friends, and all who had the joy of knowing her. Her legacy lives on in every garden planted, every pie shared, and every road yet to be traveled.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
