Carol K. Genet, age 89, a resident of Huntsville, AL, died Sunday, March 2, 2025 at Redstone Village in Huntsville, Alabama. She was born Dec. 11, 1935 in Hesperia, Michigan.
In 1954 she graduated from Mesa (Ariz.) High School. She graduated from the West Suburban Hospital School of Nursing of Oak Park in September, 1957. She worked as a nurse at hospitals in Wisconsin and Arizona and took additional schooling in Arizona and at Moody Bible Institute.
On June 20, 1959, she married Harry Genet, and worked as a nurse in Minnesota and Illinois while he completed his journalism studies and began work as an editor.
After Harry was drafted into the U.S. Army, in 1962, she joined him for a year of Arabic language study at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif. They lived for the remainder of his enlistment in Eritrea, Asmara (Ethiopia).
After their return to the U. S. and the birth of their son Brad, in 1965, she became a missionary with The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM), and a homemaker. They lived for six-and-a-half years in Beirut, Lebanon, where their daughter Brenda was born.
They moved to Wheaton, in 1973, where daughter Bresca was born the following year. In 1981, she returned to nursing part-time, serving at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center for nearly 20 years. After retiring from nursing in 2001, she became a hospice volunteer.
She was an active member of College Church in Wheaton, where she served in the nursery and as a Bible school teacher and deaconess.
She is survived by her husband Harry; a son, Brad (Sandy) of Huntsville, AL; two daughters, Brenda (David) Staufer of Arlington, TN, and Bresca Gagnon of Bedford, NH. Her eight grandchildren Becca (Phil) Hanson, Abby (Bion) Oren and Emily (Ben) Wicker, Kyle, Grant and Gabrielle Staufer, Aster and Fern Gagnon. Her four great grandchildren Elanor and Erika Oren, Lucy Wicker and Lena Hanson. She is also survived by one brother, Dr. Lowell (Mary) Smalligan. Carol was preceded in death by three infants who were born prior to the birth of each surviving child, her parents and two brothers.
A visitation will be held at College Church in Wheaton, 332 E. Seminary Ave., Wheaton, Illinois 60187, on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. The service will be livestreamed through this link: Funeral Service for Carol Genet. Burial will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to College Church Missions.
