Charles Eugene Mathews, known affectionately as Chuck by those who knew him best, passed away on June 18, 2025, at the age of 60 in
Boone, Iowa, succumbing to liver-related issues. Born on January 21, 1965, in Des Moines, Iowa, Chuck's journey through life was marked by a generous spirit and a passion for creativity.
Chuck's early life in Des Moines was filled with the love and guidance of his mother, Irma Cason-Strasser, his stepfather, LeRoy Strasser, and his sister Juanita Mathews (Nick), all of whom preceded him in death. His family grew to include his beloved siblings, Peri Cambell of Florida, Tracy Buhler (Russ) of Texas, Christopher Strasser (Jodi) of Adel, Penny Strasser-Tuckel (Matt) of Kansas, and his devoted caretaker and youngest sister, Jamie Strasser-Ross (Tony) of Norwalk. Chuck was also a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews who will miss his presence profoundly.
A proud graduate of Tech High in Des Moines, Chuck completed his secondary education in 1984 and went on to take classes at DMACC, continually expanding his knowledge and skills. His commitment to service was exemplified by his tenure in the Army National Guard, from which he received an Honorable Discharge, a testament to his dedication, discipline and the power of not letting anyone tell you what you can or cannot accomplish in this world regardless of any labels that others would like to place upon you.
Chuck's Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he found great joy in participating in church activities at Boone Open Bible. His interests, though varied, always circled back to his love for intricate details and problem-solving. Chuck was exceptionally skilled at assembling model kits, ranging from Star Wars to Transformers, often without needing instructions. His dexterity extended to the virtual world, where he mastered video games and wrote meticulous guides to help others conquer the most challenging levels.
Perhaps one of Chuck's most endearing qualities was his love for baking. He had a talent for transforming ordinary recipes into extraordinary treats, adding his unique touch to every dish. His baked goods were not only a staple at his church but also a symbol of his affection for his care team at Imagine the Possibilities and for his siblings.
Chuck's generosity knew no bounds. He lived by the principle of giving more than he received, a trait that earned him the love and respect of all who knew him. His creative, loving, and generous nature was evident in every aspect of his life, from his hobbies to his interactions with family and friends. He truly gave more to others than he ever received in return.
Charles Eugene Mathews's legacy is one of love, creativity, and selflessness. His memory will be treasured by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. Chuck's departure from this world leaves a void that can never be filled, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, and he will be laid to rest with his parents and sister at Sixteen Cemetery just North of Whatcheer in a private gathering.
