Cynthia ("Cindy") Clark Stewart, 84, of Lexington, formerly of Grosse Ile, and most recently of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away peacefully in the company of family on May 9, 2025. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, Cindy was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, George D. Stewart, her sister Linda ("Lini") Clark Hays, and her parents Clarence and Dorothy (Mehring) Clark.
Born in Michigan, Cindy was raised and attended K-12 school in both St. Clair and Port Huron before earning her degree in education at the University of Michigan, where she belonged to the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and met George. After marrying on February 3, 1962, they honeymooned in Europe before returning home to raise their family on Grosse Ile. Cindy's energy was boundless. She hosted bridge nights, was a member of the garden club, and sold real estate, delighting in helping young couples buy their first home. She loved spending time with her family and many dear friends over the years and was happiest surrounded by her children and grandchildren, adventuring in her beloved Michigan and beyond, especially Florida, Colorado, and the Virgin Islands. She shared with them her love of biking, completing many Pedal Across Lower Michigan bike rides together, creating treasured memories filled with love and laughter. Cindy enjoyed walking, gardening, sewing, snorkeling, cross country skiing, church, music in the park at the George Stewart Pavilion, and spending time at home baking, watching the birds, or relaxing on the beach.
Cindy is survived by her son James (Kristin) Stewart of Grosse Ile, daughters Mary Steffanich of Las Vegas and Sarah (Peter) Papagelis of New England, grandchildren Ian Stewart, Alexander Stewart, Jacob (Keypher) Steffanich, Shay Steffanich, and Cole Steffanich, niece Rebecca (Nick) Nelson, nephew Marcus (Kendra) Hays, and her grandnieces and grandnephews: Victoria Nelson, Dylan Hays, Emily Hays, Owen Hays, and Charlotte Hays.
We will always remember our Cindy with her bright smile, a warm hug, and a cheerful greeting. Her infectious enthusiasm, fierce determination, grace and unwavering love will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In line with her wishes, Cindy will be laid to rest alongside George at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lexington-together forever. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church at 11 A.M. on Saturday, August 2, 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cindy's memory to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund.
