Dana Robert Smith, 77, of Hudson, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on July 9th, 2025 surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter.
Born on May 25, 1948, in Stillwater, MN, Dana was the son of Bob and Betty (Grady) Smith. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1966 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire in 1970.
In 1978, Dana married Jeanne (Olson) Smith, his partner in life for over 40 years. Together, they raised three children—Keely, Toby, and Kendra—and Dana became a proud and devoted grandfather who cherished every moment with his granddaughters.
Though naturally quiet, he had a quick wit and an easy way of connecting with people. As an owner of Bob Smith’s Sports Club for many years, he built lasting friendships and strong ties within his community. He was a devoted fan of all Minnesota sports but especially Minnesota Gopher Basketball, as a season ticket holder he rarely missed a game, even in his final year.
Dana was also an avid outdoorsman who found great joy in nature. He cherished his hunting trips, especially Wisconsin deer season, days on the golf course, and quiet mornings watching birds and wildlife, often in between crushing a New York Times crossword. A gifted cook and curious foodie, he was known for preparing delicious meals and enjoyed trying new foods especially during his annual visit to the Minnesota State Fair with his children and granddaughters.
His warmth, sense of humor, and unwavering loyalty to family will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He will remain in the hearts of his beloved daughter, Keely (Dan) Ellyson; son, Toby (Nickie) Smith; daughter, Kendra (Joe) Stephens; granddaughters, Ava Ellyson, Alexandra Ellyson, Aubree Ellyson, Savanah Smith, and Charlie Stephens; sister, Peggy Wolff; sister-in-law, Cindy Kirchner; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Dana was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeanne; his parents, Bob and Betty Smith; brother, Kevin Smith; and his infant brother, Mark.
A celebration of Dana’s life will be held at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, WI on July 16th, 2025 with a public memorial service from 2:30 – 3:00 p.m. followed by a visitation from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. A private interment will be held at the Willow River Cemetery in Hudson. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family.
