Long time Kodiak resident, Daniel Richard Doyle "Doc" died peacefully in his Wasilla home June 16, 2025, after a short fight with cancer. He was 78. Born Aug 10, 1946 to John J Doyle Jr. and Catharine Dwyer Doyle. He is survived by brothers Jack Doyle and Mike Doyle.
A graduate of the Colorado School of Trades, "Doc Dan'l Gunsmith", operated his small shop many years repairing and performing custom work for local firearm owners.
Drafted into the US Army DR DOYLE quickly translated to Doc, which stuck with him. He was awarded 4 Silver Stars, 3 Bronze Stars, 4 Purple Hearts and was entered into the Tropic Lightning Combat Honor Roll of the 25th Infantry Division.
A Forward Observer (FO) for the 77th Artillery in Vietnam, Army Times newspaper featured him on its cover with the story of his hat, where he received a Silver Star getting his hat and received a Silver Star getting it back. He was selected as a member of the Special Honor Guard to represent Alaska and escorted President Dwight D Eisenhower at his funeral in Washington, DC.
Doc was 6 foot tall and athletic, but in Sep1969 a motor cycle accident at Boy Scout Lake left him wheel chair bound. A lifelong hunter, fisherman and shooter he continued his interests.
As a Class A trap shooter Winchester sponsored him for the NRA International Skeet and Clay Pigeon championship (among others). When the state High Powered Rifle championship took place at Soline Creek Rifle Range on Kodiak he took 3rd place out of his wheel chair.
After many years as volunteer Range Officer for Kodiak Island Sportsmen's Association (KISA) he was awarded a plaque in appreciation. The Kodiak Daily Mirror reporter was amazed when he witnessed him shoot a fly off the target at 100 yards while covering a KISA bench rest event.
The family will be holding a private memorial service.
