Obituary published on Legacy.com by Silha Funeral Homes - Beach on Jul. 8, 2025.
Darrell was born on December 13, 1944 to Herman and Lillian (Jendro) Feldmann in
Beach, ND. He was soon joined by his brother Dale, and sisters Marlys and Leann.
The family resided on a farm north of Beach, nestled in green hills and grassland, raising beef cattle, milk cows, chickens and hogs. Darrel attended Lapla, a one room country grade school, and graduated from Beach High School in 1964.
As a youngster Darrell could often be found building some kind of go cart or mechanical contraption that often had imperfect brakes. One time Darrell made a pull buggy, hooked it up to Sugar, the old mare, and off they went. Sugar tore off behind the outhouse and shattered that buggy to pieces.
Darrell always had a glimmer in his bright blue eyes and was quite a prankster. One time his Dale and Herman were out hunting deer, perhaps out of season. They were soon being chased by a fast car and spotlight. They were sure they were caught by the game warden, only to find Darrell behind the wheel laughing till the tears came.
Darrell joined the Army National Guard in 1965 and served for 6 years. Upon return, he married Sharon Rogers December 20, 1968. The two soon welcomed their oldest son Ward, followed by their sons Loren, Ryan and Kyle.
The family made their home in the country and farmed and ranched. With everyone's help, they lived a farm and ranch life. Prior to his death, Darrell and his son Ryan were running the family farm north of Beach. While Sharon and Darrell divorced in 1991, they remained good friends.
Darrell never met a pinochle game he didn't enjoy or complain good-heartedly about. He would spend long afternoons with friends playing three or four-handed pinochle, drinking coffee and trading stories. Darrell also enjoyed a good coffee break with local farmers and ranchers at Cenex, talking about the weather, rain, and lack thereof. He enjoyed old tractors and long conversations.
Darrell loved to laugh and be with friends and family. Darrell had a laugh that made nearly all smile and join in, and made his boys roll their eyes and shake their heads. Darrell loved dancing and did so with enthusiasm and smiles.
He and his best friend Fats (Don) Abernathy enjoyed many afternoons sharing a game (or several) of pinochle, and having great adventures. They even took a journey to improve their pie baking skills. They went to a workshop in Montana and perfected their craft. Darrell could make a mean apple pie that was enjoyed occasionally at family gatherings.
Darrell always enjoyed a good (or bad) day fishing on the ice. His love of a good prank wasn't just for childhood. Darrell took his daughter-in-law Laura on her first ice fishing trip. He knew she was a bit anxious about driving on the ice. As they were driving over the frozen lake, the foot deep ice cracking, he pointed to a collapsed ice house with only the roof showing and calmly said, oh, that one must of went through. This sent Laura into a bit of a panic attack and caused great laughter in the pickup.
In later years Darrell became quite spear fisherman.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Lillian Feldmann. Darrell is survived by his four sons: Ward and his wife Monika of Pasco, Washington, and their children McKenzie, Bridger, Braxton and Maycen; Loren and his wife Laura of
Beach, North Dakota, and their children Tessa, Tyra, Taya and Tegan; Ryan of Wibaux, Montana; and Kyle of Wibaux, Montana; his brother, Dale (Pat) Feldmann of Wibaux, MT, and sisters Marlis Smith of Fargo, ND; and Leann Zimmerman of Prescott Valley, Arizona.
A vigil service will be held at 6 pm, July 15 at St. John's Catholic Church in
Beach, ND. A celebration of life service will be July 16, 10:30 am at St. John's. A brief luncheon after the service will be held at the church. A burial service at Wibaux County Cemetery, in Wibaux, MT, will follow the luncheon.
