Darrell Conwell Sawyer, 83, of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025. Born on May 11, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia, he was the son of the late Dessie Overton Sawyer and Walter Sawyer.
Darrell was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his devoted wife of 23 years, "Lucille" Sawyer; his children, Linda Sawyer, Donna Sawyer, and JR Sawyer; stepchildren Al (Laura) and Cindy (Hallett); brothers Elton Sawyer and Gilbert Sawyer; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Walter, and eight siblings, Eugene, Lelean, Bill, Lillian, Margie, Audrey, Bobby, and Lionel, who now welcome him home with open arms.
Darrell lived a full and vibrant life, defined by his devotion to family, a tireless work ethic, and a spirit of generosity. A true "Jack of all trades," Darrell was especially skilled in construction and carpentry, helping to build numerous hotels and shopping centers throughout his career. His talents extended far beyond the job site-he was known for his willingness to lend a hand and was deeply committed to his community.
A proud and active member of Moose Lodge, Darrell not only enjoyed many good times playing pool with friends there, but also gave back generously-cooking meals, renovating the social hall, and ensuring the Lodge remained a welcoming space for all.
In his younger years, Darrell's love of speed led him to go-kart and car racing, where he earned many awards. He also found joy in coon hunting with his beloved dogs, collecting numerous trophies along the way. Later in life, boating adventures with family and RV travels with his loving wife, Lucille, brought him great happiness and lasting memories.
Darrell will be remembered for his steady presence, his big heart, and his unwavering commitment to those he loved. His stories, laughter, and legacy will live on in the hearts of many.
A celebration of life will be held on August 1, 2025 from 2pm to 4pm at the Portsmouth Moose Lodge located at 1400 George Washington Highway Chesapeake, VA 23323.
