Darwin Lowell Smith, age 83, of Bayard, IA, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
A graveside service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Monday, June 23, 2024 at the Highland Cemetery in rural Bayard, IA.
Arrangements are under the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids and online condolences may be left for Darwin's family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com
Darwin was born on May 19, 1942 at his parents' home in Panora, IA, and he was the son of Alvin and Ruby (Kraft) Smith. He grew up in Bayard and graduated from the Bayard High School with the Class of 1960. He attended the University of Iowa and then worked for the Lake City Graphic, the Mapleton Press, and the Carroll Daily Times Herald as a linotype operator. He later worked for Farmers Co-op in Bayard and operated a custom spraying business for 20 years, retiring in 1996. During his retirement, Darwin worked on the Gary Fell farm. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids. Darwin had a love for the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he loved animals and riding horses.
Darwin is survived by his daughter Shannon Anderson (John) of Guthrie Center; son Joel Smith (Mary) of Bayard; four grandchildren: Chase Duncan of Grimes, Traci Gafford (Andrew) of Perry, Jordyn Smith (Melanie) of Guthrie Center, and Justyn Smith of Bayard; three great-grandchildren, Payton, Keeley, and Ruby; brother LaVerne Smith (Donna) of Carroll; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Darwin was preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Ruby Smith, and son Darin Smith in infancy.
