With love and respect, we announce the passing of Darwin R. Walter, Jr., on July 7, 2025, in Anchorage, at the age of 90.
Dar lived a life defined by steadfast commitment to those he loved. He worked tirelessly to build a strong foundation for his family, leading by example with integrity and generosity.
He was born on Dec. 28, 1934, in Seattle, Wash., to Nora and Darwin R. Walter, Sr. At a young age, he went to live with his aunt and uncle. He joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and was stationed in Wrangell, where he met his future wife, Dolly. After the birth of two daughters, the family moved to Seattle, where Dar attended the University of Washington and worked for Boeing, and the family expanded by four more children. In 1971, the family moved to Juneau, where he began working for the State of Alaska. In 1975, Dar's job brought the family to Anchorage, where he remained for 50 years. He retired as the assistant director of the Employment Security Division at the Department of Labor.
Dar brought warmth, humor, and patience to family gatherings and everyday life. He valued harmony in his relationships and always sought understanding and compromise. His diplomatic nature and steady mindset helped him face challenges with calm and clarity.
A lifelong learner, Dar found fulfillment in exploring ideas that reflected his sense of ethics and justice. He found joy in philosophy, science, religion, politics and aliens and loved sharing what he learned through thoughtful conversations and the occasional spirited debate. Dar welcomed new ideas with curiosity and an open mind while staying true to his values.
But while he enjoyed deep talks, nothing made him happier than cleaning freshly caught clams, dipnetting on the Kenai River or designing and building creative solutions in his workshop.
Dar's gentle strength, wit, and calm presence were a source of comfort and support to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Carmelita "Dolly" Walter; children, Darice Walter, Darwin V. Walter, Sr. (Martha), Diane Walter, Dawn Medema (Max), and Daniel Walter; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Dolly Roit.
A funeral Mass to honor and celebrate Dar's life will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 12 at St. Patrick's Parish, 2111 Muldoon Road, Anchorage.

A very gentlemanly person. Met Dar and Dolly at their home in Anchorage. Worked with Dolly at DVR for years. Thanks for welcoming this "Cheechaco" and family to Anchorage circa September 1978.
