It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, David Brian Bruno, who passed away suddenly at home on July 2, 2025, at the age of 61.
David was born on September 4, 1963, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late John Joseph and Margaret (O'Day) Bruno. After graduating high school, he pursued EMT certification and proudly served his country in the United States Navy. From 1983 to 2003, David dedicated 20 years of honorable service as a Navy corpsman. His extensive military training included radiation health, fleet marine force training, independent duty corpsman certification, and firefighting. Among the many commendations he received were the National Defense Medal, Navy Overseas Service Medal, and the Pistol Marksmanship Medal.
On May 6, 1984, David married the love of his life, Laura Helgersen, who stood by his side through his naval career, moving together from base to base. Following his retirement from military service, the couple made their home in Salem, Missouri, where David continued his life of service and community involvement.
David served as a volunteer firefighter for the Lenox Rural Fire Department and was a board member for six years. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Counseling, with a focus on children and families with special needs. He was deeply passionate about helping others and was known for his fierce love for his family and unwavering sense of duty.
An active member of the American Legion Post #99 in Salem, David enjoyed spending time with fellow veterans and was especially fond of Sunday afternoon card games.
David is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Laura Bruno, of the home; children, Joseph Bruno and wife Kimberly of Rolla, MO, and Amanda Bruno of Sullivan, MO; grandchildren, Emma Bruno, Brian Bruno, Abigail Bruno, Maximus Horn, and Evelynn Horn; brothers, Ray Bruno and wife Terry of Lenox, MO, and Andy Bruno and wife Melissa of Salem, MO; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the American Legion Post #99 in Salem, with Billy Walker officiating. Visitation for family and friends will take place at the Legion prior to the service, beginning at 2:00 PM.
David's legacy of service, kindness, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Dave was always willing to offer advice and guidance when I asked. I didn't get to work with him as much as others but he always had a joke or a snack to share with myself and clients when we seen each other.
