Delbert “Del” James Ashbacher, 78, of Urbandale, IA passed away unexpectedly on July 5, 2025, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. According to Delbert's wishes cremation rites have taken place and no services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be written in his name to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa or Whiskers TNR of Warren County. He was born April 6, 1947, in Waukon, IA, to Jerome and Enid (Russell) Ashbacher. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1965, and attended Simpson College. He married Vicki Rae Clark on June 26, 1970 at Central Lutheran Church in Des Moines, IA.
Del retired in 2012 after 43 years at Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. He was respected and well-liked by all his coworkers.
Del spent his life alongside his wife, Vicki. Together, they shared many adventures in their travels, creating countless memories. They especially enjoyed their trips to his daughter, Amy (Kevin Thompson) Ashbacher, in Littleton, MA two or three times a year. He was a proud and loving grandfather to three grandchildren: Max Thompson, Duncan Thompson, and Heloise Thompson, whose lives he touched with his kindness and humor. He also leaves behind his two brothers, Albert (Donna) Ashbacher of Decorah, IA, Robert (Patricia) Ashbacher of Omaha, NE, and sister, Joann Sanderson of Emporia, KS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, John Sanderson.
Del adored his family and even his two naughty cats, Bingo and Jenga. Del was an avid card player and a member of both Bridge and 500 clubs. He will be missed by all his friends and neighbors who enjoyed his easy going and kind nature.
