Donald A. Weiss, 89, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at the Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls, SD. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Sinai Lutheran Church in Sinai, SD. A Visitation will be held the night prior from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga, SD on March 28, 2025.
Donald Adolph Weiss was born December 19, 1935 on the family farm near Hetland, SD as a twin. His parents were Adolph Weiss and Hertha (Rusch) Weiss.
He grew up going to a country school in his grade school years and graduated from Lake Preston High School. He served in the Army from 1958-1960, stationed in Leadville, Colorado. He was a member of the Sinai Legion Quail-Evenson Post #133 in Sinai.
He met and married Carol Lind from Sinai and was married October 24, 1964. They lived in Brookings and raised two children Kevin & Karla. Don worked as a mechanic for George Perry Implement in Arlington for 6 years. In Brookings he worked for Robertson Electric, and then became the Director of Transportation for the Brookings School District for 30 years, keeping the buses running smoothly.
Near retirement, they moved to Carol's family farm near Sinai and had a hobby farm raising miniature animals of all kinds (his pets). Don also enjoyed collecting and restoring old International tractors. He teased that he had several tractors, and didn't farm any crops.
Don deeply enjoyed showing off his animals, giving kids tractor rides and hayrides. They took several bus trips, including Twins & Vikings games. He also loved playing cards with friends and playing practical jokes on anyone.
Don served on the Lake Sinai Township Board for several years and held a few jobs in the Sinai Church as a Trustee.
Don and Carol moved from the farm to Brookings for two years, then to Sioux Falls after several health issues and Dementia set in for both. They lived at the Inn on Westport until he broke his hip, then Dow Rummel for the last two years.
Don is survived by his son Kevin (Rose) Weiss of Vermillion, daughter Karla Weiss of Sioux Falls. Three grandchildren, Zach (Mandy) Weiss, Kyle Weiss, and Abby (Ryan) Johnson. Two great-grandchildren, Aubrey Ploof, and Corbin Johnson. Twin sister Dorothy (Weiss) Mueller.
Preceded in death by wife Carol, his parents, brother Arnold Weiss, twin Sisters Lillie (Weiss) Gloe & Lila (Weiss) Brown, three brother-in-laws, and one sister-in-law.
