Doris Caputo Obituary

Doris A. Caputo, 92, passed away on October 20, 2025 in Amsterdam, NY. She was the oldest child of Edward and Edna (Jablonski) Wierzchowski.

A lifelong area resident, Doris was raised on Lepper Road in Fort Johnson where she lived until her marriage to Robert J. Syzdek. She later remarried to Augustine (Augie) M. Caputo. Doris Graduated from Perth Central School in the class of 1951, of which she was the Valedictorian.

Doris worked in the business office of Bigelow Sanford Carpet Mills of Amsterdam, and in the business office at St. Mary's Hospital before transferring to work in the Department of Mental Health. At age 50, Doris opened her own business. She was the first owner of the Valley Mini Mart Convenient Store & Deli- later to become a gas station, on the Southside of Amsterdam. Doris also spent a lot of time helping out her son Thomas, at his store "Ship and Copy."

Doris was predeceased by her husbands, Robert J. Syzdek and Augustine M. Caputo, her son Robert J. Syzdek, Jr., and her sisters, Christine (Arthur) Luba and Elizabeth Kilcoyne. She is survived by her sister Carol (James) Kadamus, her son Thomas P. Syzdek and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Doris lived on Willow Court with her son Thomas P. Syzdek. She read many books and did the daily crossword puzzles. Her favorite book was "Where the Crawdads Sing" by Delia Owens and her favorite author was David Baldacci. She loved to play golf with her good friend Jean V., and was thrilled to attend the 2014 Masters Tournament. She also spent time playing "Mexican Train" with neighbor friends from the condominiums. She was a member of St. Stephen's Church in Hagaman.
