John Cullum Obituary

John Alton Cullum, 87, was welcomed into his heavenly home on Friday, September 12, 2025, surrounded by his children and granddaughters.

A proud resident of Marrero, John lived a life filled with laughter, kindness, and adventure. He served honorably as an Airman First Class in the United States Air Force, but his greatest joy was found in the simple, everyday moments with family and friends.

John was a longtime member of DeGaulle Church of Christ and never missed a chance to lend a helping hand. He kept life lighthearted with his quick wit and endless jokes, making everyone around him laugh right up to the very end.

He loved fishing, landscaping, nutrition, and hunting for treasures in his comic book collection—which he enjoyed sharing and selling almost as much as collecting. A devoted bowler, John proudly bowled with his Monday “Life is Golden” team and his Wednesday “Sassy Seniors.” His teammates and friends will remember the way his grin could brighten even the toughest game.

John leaves behind a family that adored him: his children Deborah Truesdale (Ted), David Cullum (Elizabeth), Dawn Chartier (Daniel), and Duane Cullum (Dana); eight grandchildren—Megan, Ross, Morgan, Rebecca, Melissa, Ashley, Zach, and Kaiden; three step-grandchildren—Alana, Jennifer, and Tessa; five great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Peggy and brother Robert, his niece Sarah Diano (Phil) whom he cherished as a daughter, and his dear friend and neighbor Scott Toups & family.

John now rejoins those he loved who went before him: his parents, Alton Crawford Cullum and Edna F. Cullum; his first wife, Minnie Bigner Cullum, the mother of his children; his second wife, Mary Piskorik; and his beloved companion, Myrtle “Bo” Abram.

John’s family will remember him as a man who loved deeply, laughed often, and taught them all to find joy in the little things. His humor, warmth, and playful spirit will be dearly missed but forever carried in their hearts.

Visitation will be held at Mothe Funeral Home, 7040 Lapalco Boulevard, Marrero, LA on Saturday, September 20, 2025 from 11 AM to 1 PM. Military honors and prayers will follow. A graveside gathering will take place for 3:30 PM at the Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery in Pumpkin Center (Hammond), LA.
