Douglas Laugero Obituary

Douglas Alfred Laugero

March 2, 2025

Modesto, California - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Doug Laugero. He peacefully left us in his sleep at the age of 80, following complications of Lewy Body Dementia.

Doug touched the lives of many and was known for his warmth and generosity. A proud Italian-American, his life was a testament to the values of kindness, hard work, and humility. He showed us that true success is measured not only by accomplishments but by the kindness and integrity with which one treats others. Doug placed his family and faith above all else, and nobody loved his children and grandchildren more than he did. Above all, he cherished the 58 years spent with his beloved wife, Judy, his high school sweetheart. Their marriage was a shining example of commitment and true love, a bond that lasted for over six decades and continues to inspire all who know them.

Doug is a proud graduate of the University of San Francisco, and went on to build a distinguished 53 year career as a CPA. Over 25 years, he grew his own practice, earning the trust of his clients through dedication, expertise, and compassion. His professional success was grounded in the same principles that guided his personal life-hard work, humility, sense of humor, resilience, and kindness. He got his work ethic, sociability, and full-speed-ahead mindset from his mom, and his toughness, desire to serve his community, and soft spot for the underdog from his dad.

Doug enjoyed traveling and vacationing with his family and friends, playing golf, gardening, singing, and savoring a cup of coffee or a glass of vino over meals shared with loved ones. He was a proud Nonno who cherished time spent with his grandchildren, who loved him dearly. Doug was an enthusiastic fan of the Yankees, SF Giants, 49ers, and Boston Celtics. He loved listening to baseball games on the radio, marveled at Joe Montana's 2-minute miracles, delighted in Yogi-isms and Phil Rizzuto's signature "Holy cow," and enjoyed Red Auerbach's victory speeches with a good laugh. He spent hours coaching and playing sports. He loved sharing stories about playing sports with his brother in high school, where they excelled as pitcher-catcher, quarterback-receiver, and point guard-forward duos. He treasured the laughs and time shared with his sister, Shirley, and brother-in-law Kirvin.

Doug helped a lot of people and also gave back to his community in numerous ways. He served as a hospice board member, a faith formation leader at Our Lady of Fatima Church, and President of Bel Passi Little League Baseball. He was also a dedicated Modesto Sunrise Rotary Club member and a naturally skilled youth baseball coach, where he helped foster the love of the game in young players.

Doug is survived by his wife Judy; his children, Kevin (wife Lara) and Amie (husband Mike); and his cherished grandchildren, Gabriella, Ava, Andy, and Jonathan. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Minnie; his sister, Shirley Knox; and his brother, Stan.

A private service will be held with immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Providence Hospice Napa Valley, 414 South Jefferson St., Napa, CA 94559, or Hospice of your choice.

I did not know Doug...but when I saw the name Laugero and read his tribute I knew right away he must be Judy's husband. I was Judy' s hairdresser years and years ago and although she may not remember me...I remember her! Someone so kind, so gentle, with such a sweet smile you just don't forget. What a beautiful depiction of true love and devotion. So sorry for the loss of the Laurgero family patriarch. God bless you Judy.

My condolences to Judy, Kevin and Amy, and the grandchildren.

Doug was the family business accountant, but was first and foremost a friend.

I learned so much from Doug, as a player, coach, and boardmember (I was a generation behind Doug) at Bel Passi Baseball, and later in life as a business owner (I inherited Doug as the business accountant when I bought my parents business).
He was very patient- teaching me basic business practices over and over again each year.

Doug and Judy are a shining example of a happily married couple (as we're my parents).

Judy - enjoy the kids, and even more the grandkids. You will find Doug in their smiles, in their eyes and in their laughs.

Much love to the entire family.

Doug was a natural leader and great athlete and I always had great respect for him. I enjoyed playing sports and serving on high school student council with him and any time we spent together. He was just really a fine guy, one of a kind.

Doug and I grew up together, our families being close friends that got together once a week to share dinner and local news. Our fathers worked together and our moms made sure we all made our families proud. Some of my fondest memories were when, after the meal, we kids (Stan, Doug, and I, and sometimes Shirley, if she was home, and my younger brother Dave) would stand by the piano for music time. I played piano, Stan the trumpet, Doug on his saxophone, and Dave still learning on his cornet, and we'd sing and play old songs together, our parents joining in with singing. It passed the time in fun and fellowship and was something I always looked forward to.
Doug never had a harsh word for anyone, smiling and laughing at our antics. He was shy and quiet, but I knew he was the real star in his family. His kindness and compassion were traits we could depend on, and I knew he would do great things in his community. There was only one Doug Laugero, and he is truly missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

I am originally from Hughson, and we played very competitive games with Escalon. We always had the highest respect for Doug and Stan. No matter the sport, the Laugeros were always bringing their best. We are sorry for your loss and will never forget Doug.

Although it's been many years since I've seen Doug, I have fond memories of him as our Senior Class president and Cougar Quarterback. He was kind to everyone and was calm and confident in the huddle. My deepest sympathy to Judy and family.

My condolences to Doug's family. I have fond memories our time coaching at and serving on the Board of Directors of the Bel Passi youth baseball program.
Doug was a kind, generous, skilled and excellent coach who truly cared about the program and more importantly the youngsters who played for him. He not only taught them the fundamentals of baseball but also served as an example of good sportsmanship and respect for others. RIP my friend.

My condolences to you and ,Judy . You and Doug were the best neighbors. Doug & I served on the FDV Board. He always calmed me down and was a voice of reason. Very well respected. Kind of reminded me of Teddy Roosevelt-walk softly & carry a big stick . I saw the glimmer in his eyes when he spoke about his grandkids. He was humbly proud of his children . And his faith-very strong. He was a good man .
