Dr. William Davis Obituary

Dr. William Wiant “Dave” Davis II passed away on July 17, 2025, on Mt. Washington, in New Hampshire, at the age of 79. Born on May 26, 1946, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, he grew up in Westerville, Ohio. He led a life marked by intellectual rigor, public service, and deep personal commitment to his family and community.

Dr. Davis earned his bachelor's degree from Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve) in 1968 and received a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Wisconsin in 1973. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a distinguished career that spanned both academia and government service.

He began his professional journey as a faculty member in the Statistics Department at Carnegie Mellon University. From there, he brought his expertise to several prominent institutions, including Lockheed, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Center for Naval Analysis, and the National Cancer Institute. His career culminated with his role as Chief Statistician for the Social Security Administration—a position that reflected both his technical acumen and dedication to public service.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Davis was deeply engaged with his community and family life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellen Gagne; his much-loved son, Jason Davis; two brothers—Don Davis and his wife, Jean, and Richard Davis and his wife, Rita McLeary; and his sister, Deborah Blackley, and her husband, Andrew. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Davis I and Mary Davis.

Dr. Davis had a lifelong passion for U.S. history—particularly the 20th century—and enjoyed reading biographies of American presidents as well as following current political and economic developments. A devoted fan of English Premier League soccer, he also found joy in playing duplicate bridge, achieving Life Master status in 2024.

His commitment to service extended far beyond his professional life. He volunteered as a soccer and basketball coach for Jason’s teams during childhood and was a dedicated blood donor throughout adulthood. At Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, Maryland, he served faithfully as both deacon and usher. In later years, he contributed to Meals on Wheels programs—further evidence of a life lived with compassion and purpose.

Dr. William Wiant “Dave” Davis II will be remembered for his intellect, integrity, and unwavering dedication to both country and community. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in the fall at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church. Instead of flowers, contributions may be sent in memory of William Davis to Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio.
