Earnest "Ray" Smith, 78, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Truman VA Hospital on June 26, 2025.
Born March 15, 1947, in Columbia, he was the son of the late Earnest Smith and Lula (Robinson) Smith. Ray was a humble and kind-hearted man who never met a stranger. He was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous spirit, and the joy he brought to those around him.
Ray proudly served his country as a Vietnam veteran, a chapter of his life that shaped his deep respect for service, sacrifice, and brotherhood. In his final act of generosity, Ray was also an organ donor, continuing his lifelong commitment to helping others.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jan Patschke-Smith; daughters Lee (David) Wegner-Groth and Tami "Boots" Patschke; and his brother, Richard Smith. He was a proud grandfather to Nickolas (Aubrey), Christopher "Kit" (Shori), Lindsey (Arion), Austin (Spencer), Codi (Bailey), and Garrett (Lex), as well as special family members Tad and Susan. He also leaves behind three cherished great-grandchildren, Blakely Jo (with whom he loved to FaceTime), Lilly, and Jack.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Garland Crane and James Crane.
Ray and Jan had been together since August 1976, and after many years of shared laughter, love, and life, they realized they were meant for each other and made it official on June 5, 2004. Their bond was a testament to lasting love and companionship.
Ray lived a full and active life. He loved spending time outdoors, going to the boat with his brother Richard, and was an avid fisherman and sportsman. A longtime member of the Eagles, he enjoyed Monday night card games and shared many laughs and memories with his close friends. He was also a member of the $3 Club and had a lifelong passion for golf.
In his younger years, Ray was a standout athlete and an all-star pitcher in both baseball and softball during high school. His humble nature and loyal heart left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
A visitation will be held at Nilson-Millard Funeral Home on Sunday, July 6, from 1:00 p.m. until the start of the service at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family and will be distributed to charities that were special to Ray.
Ray will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nilson-Millard Cremation & Burial Center, 5611 E. St. Charles Rd.; Columbia, MO 65202. (573) 474-8443. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.millardfamilychapels.com
