Edith "Edie" Bray Cartwright, age 74, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, June 30, 2025, surrounded by her family. Born in Pasquotank County on January 10, 1951, to the late Robert C. Bray and Louise Clifton Bray, she was the widow of Raymond Carlton Cartwright. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and worked in Material Management at the Coast Guard Base. Very creative, she loved making wreaths and other crafts.
Edie was raised right, growing up in Weeksville in Bray's Country Store. She loved making others happy. A lover of music, she was an avid Elvis fan. Among many fond memories of Edie, her driving around town in her beloved pink Mustang will forever be remembered as a reflection of her vibrant personality and zest for life. Always a smile on her face, she embraced life with grace and dignity. Her gentle spirit and kind nature were a source of comfort and strength for both family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Kristin Smith and husband, Jason; her sister, Virginia "Ginny" Bray Ward and husband, Marvin H. "Chap" Ward; a daughter-in-law, Renee Banks; grandchildren, Austin, Alexis, Adrienne, and extended grandchildren, Dustin, Sway, Gabi and Blake; seven great-grandchildren, Adalyn, Landon, Waylon, A. J., Raya, Bowen, and Isabella; her niece, Hayley; her nephew, Ryan; and a special aunt and niece, Grace and Dawn. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her son, Arthur James "Bo" Gladden III; and her best friend, Ava Goodwin.
A Gathering of Friends will take place from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Twiford Memorial Chapel.
Though Edie is no longer with us, her memory will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
